    Artist History
Tampa, Florida is said to have more strikes of lightning than any other location in the United States. For proof, look no further than one such strike -- the birth of Spacious International. Formed in the spring of 1998, each member had already earned the dreaded "local music scenester" status, having participated in -- then abandoned -- several notable indie bands in the area. In fact, it's largely their rejection of rock chords and straight beats that makes Spacious so unique.Since their inception, Spacious have been crafting some of the most interesting music south of Chapel Hill. A fifty/fifty blend of guitars and Casio keyboards, their songs drift from space pop to epic, jazz-tinged instrumentals. It's certainly not the kind of music you'd expect to come out of a town formerly known as "Death Metal Capital of the World", but for the five guys in Spacious, there couldn't be a better place to land.James Bess, Gerald Hammill and Kevin Pytlak previously played together in an angular, indie rock outfit known as Edison Shine. Tired of recycling the same old guitar riffs every night, the three dismissed dear old Edison during the last remaining weeks of 1997. Four months later, the music itch began to creep. Double fisting Bloody Mary's as their salve, James spent a weekend in Gerald's apartment collaborating with him on new songs in a make-shift studio. Rather than piss off the neighbors, live drums and amplifiers were bypassed and substituted with hand-me-down keyboards plugged directly into the 4-track recorder. Come Sunday, the two were slightly hung over but pleasantly surprised with the results. They began to kick around the idea of starting a new band. The ground rules were set: NO rock beats and NO guitar feedback. Kevin, armed with maracas, enlisted as drummer the very next day.At this point, Spacious just happened. A chance meeting between Daniel Wainright and Gerald at a downtown dive resulted in a demo tape swap in the front row of a Tricky concert a week later. Soon after, Dave Sargent, a former punk drummer turned guitarist, signed up to provide additional bleeps and bloops. On August, 2, 1998, Spacious finally introduced themselves to their friends and friends of friends in a tightly packed basement bar.Spacious continues to divide their time between live shows and recording. The basic tracks of this self-titled debut were pieced together last summer in their practice space with James manning the recorder. Overdubs and mixing took place a few months later at a friend's digital studio. Completely self-produced, their full-length is exactly how the group wants you to know them. Since formation, Spacious have shifted from an earnest dependency on pawn shop keyboards to a full-on aesthetic embrace. Meanwhile, the band continues to expand their Casio collection and one day may even purchase a real synthesizer or two.
