Artist History
Mitchelle was born singing, a sort of nonstop musical wail that eventually - powered by a V-8, 4-on-the-floor pair of lungs - developed into a BIG voice that remained in a little body (hitting a whopping 5' 1/2" ... which is where she stayed). Her love affair with the guitar started at age 8 when her stepdad brought home a little nylon-stringed guitar and a Mel Bay book and she taught herself to play. Meanwhile, that voice grew and seasoned as she sang in the bathtub, in the shower, in choirs, in musicals, as Columbia at the Rocky Horror Picture Show at 1:00 in the morning, and eventually out in the world of clubs and coffeehouses. Mitchelle debuted her first original song in an SF club just before her 18th birthday, a sad little tear-jerker that foreshadowed the alt-country flavor she would later develop by way of rock, punk, pop and a little bit of folk influence. She recorded her first full-length all-originals CD, Dawn of the Night Flyers, in 2000, and formed The Mitchelle Tanner Group in 2002. The band’s first CD together is slated for release in late Summer 2003, and their growing fanbase keeps them on their toes with urgent emails saying, “When is your next gig? When is the CD coming out? When will you have personalized coffeecups for us?” |

Press Reviews
Performing Songwriter Magazine, Jan-Feb 2001:"A veteran of the San Francisco area singer-songwritercircuit, Mitchelle Tanner decided nearly two years ago toundertake the recording of her debut CD. With the help of several generous financial supporters (whose names are listed in the liner notes), Tanner has come up with a collection of adult-contemporary pop songs presented in deftly-crafted, sometimes lush, arrangements. Centered on Tanners fine acoustic guitar work and expressive, slightly tremulous voice, Dawn of the Night Flyers zigzags gracefully between girl-with-guitar balladry, full-on folk rockers, and light pop ditties.Getting assistance from several empathetic backing players (most notably, multi-instrumentalist and co-producer Kevin Harris), Tanner employs subtletouches of violin, electric guitar, brushed percussion, and nuanced drum programming to create a song cycle that uplifts the spirit at every turn. Indeed, when Tanner sings on Queen of the Land that she has made a castle froma bed of sand, shes in effect cheering herself with a theme that runs throughout this superb debut."~ Russell Hall, Performing Songwriter Magazine |
