    Artist History
Matt Houston: My inclinations in music have their roots in the late '70's when I became fascinated with synth work on hearing it in Pink Floyd, Vangelis, and Tangerine Dream. In the mid-eighties I listened almost exclusively to synth-centered music. At the end of the eighties I went on a binge of Indian and Asian traditional forms (ragas, arabian forms, etc.) chased with Laurie Anderson, Kate Bush, and other artists with avant-rock leanings; modern/postmodern authors like John Cage, Steve Reich, Terry Riley, George Crumb and Morton Subotnik; and a healthy supplement of jazz (usually of the cerebral, "free" type). I have recently been attracted to mathematical music such as fractal and genetic algorithmet al. (except for that wierd "mathcore"). Throughout that time to the present I have steadily followed electronic in one form or another. It's probably in my DNA. So much for my influences. Most of those influences had shaped my inclinations before I had a way of manifesting them. Not until I employed the power of the PC was I truly accommodated in my lifelong yearning to produce electronic music. The standard workstation bearing black-and-whites has historically been prohibitively costly and inflexible for my purposes. In addition the models I usually favored tended to obsolesce promptly (except, I suppose, for the Roland SH 101). By contrast I may gradually and more cheaply upgrade PC hardware and use free (GPL'd) software to the same effect. You will see me in a live setting with a box and a keyboard controller. period. I find all my cylinders of creation firing properly after dark and usually after a massive sugar-caffeine-mp3 intake. Something I heard out of the corner of my ear, maybe a chord in a jazzy drum and bass track will send me galloping to my machine to begin an all night session. I have always drawn and painted, but since seeing Tron I have had an interest in computer art. One new hero I have added to my pantheon is Michael Gogins, who wrote "Music Graphs for Algorithmic Composition and Synthesis with an Extensible Implementation in Java." My kind of poison. Software and expression all rolled into 1. (like those DeCSS T-shirts). Currently I am creating an illicit sequel to Tron, all CG, with the subgoal of reuniting Journey (and Wendy Carlos of course) for the soundtrack! Brian Copeland Q & A.... What do you like most about 'Euphonic Dissonance'? This is the first band I've ever been in that doesn't involve sitting around JAMMING. I have to say that I'm happy with that. Matt and I do our own thing seperately from one another....only to come together for concerts and album preparation. Why did you choose the Guitar, bass, keyboards, voice? I've been playing guitar since I was 8 years old. I blame Leo Kottke and my father for putting me on the path of being a guitar player. My dad was a big Kottke fan and he made me into one as well. I guess my dad was a really big musical influence on me even though he didn't possess any real musical talent himself. He just had a lot of really good records. The other instruments followed. I just couldn't leave well enough alone. I wanted to do everything. I often wonder if I could have been a better guitarist if I had concentrated on that one instrument alone. If only I had a time machine. Anything else? Brian is a guitartist by nature and an audio engineer by design. The owner of Aromatone Recording Studios and Aromatone Records, he has worked with and been influenced by many styles of music. "In the 80's I becams a big fan of industrial and synth based music. When I opened the studio I realized I had the means to record and perform the type of music I always loved. The teaming with Matt was natural. We had been friends for quite awhile and he's one of the few people that can stand me for any amount of time. His musical influences were a great contrast to my own."
