Artist History
Growing up in St. Louis, Missouri, David began classical piano training at age 5. David has been recording since 1987, when he made his first demo tape. He made seven more demos between 1988 and 1991. The best moments from these early tapes were collected on the anthology Integrity (2000).
In 1992, David produced his first album for public consumption, Chivalry, which sold over 200 copies between the Internet and consignment in indie record shops. Chivalry was very well received critically, and he followed with Affection and Lust (1994), then left music production for an extended period.
Five years later, David returned with the instrumental set One Swell Foop: Instrumentalysis v2.0 (1999), the original being a demo tape from 10 years earlier. Encouraged by the results, David began working on a new vocal album. In 2001, he issued a handful of tracks as MP3 singles.
Finally, David's long-awaited album premiered in September 2002 as Calliope, a well-produced but decidedly darker album than past DV material has tended to be. In addition to re-recorded versions of the 2001 singles "The Caves" and "The Coming of the Dead" and their B-sides, the album also featured the singles "Stained Glass" and "Numb".
David presently lives in St. Louis with his wife Ann, 3 1/2-year-old son Eric, and three cats. By day, he teaches web development technologies for ITT Technical Institute. He has been on the Internet since 1988, plays fantasy baseball, once ran for the Oregon state legislature, quit smoking four months ago, and is a bit daft over the color purple. |
