Ros King played the open mike at The Living Room in Collingswood just the other night and delivered one of the gravelliest versions of “Vincent Black Lightning 1952” I think I’ve ever heard. Everyone in the room was listening and there was a definite electricity circulating. In my opinion, this is how Richard Thompson’s love song about a red-headed girl and her young but not-so-innocent boyfriend ought to be sung – dark and raw. Ros has got that young but not-so-innocent look himself. He gets up on stage some weeks barefoot, wearing overalls and no shirt. Other nights he’ll wear a goofy t-shirt proclaiming, “Same Shirt, Different Day.” It sometimes seems the music is the ONLY thing he takes seriously but, really, isn’t that enough? Janet Picnally ,Newton Arts "First time I heard him sing at the old Twisters in Haddon Heights I was blown away. He’s got this deep, belty combination of Greg Brown/Tom Waites/maybe a little Leonard Cohen happening. He’ll croon a Bruce Springsteen ballad like “The River” that’ll give you chills, then he’ll shift gears into an original about white trash that he calls “Christmas in a Trailer Park.” Definitely NOT (thank God) politically correct.
