Artist History
Founded in the fall of 1999, General Patterson's Southern Salvation was designed as a vehicle to allow three very uncontainable musicians the ability to perform under free-form rules, basically creating every aspect of a song right before the eye's of the crowd. Taking the stage without any prepared music, The "Southern Salvation" created its own image out of the minds of the daring three by starting the night with a simple guitar lick, a funky bass line, or an engaging drum riff, exploring each until the idea was exhausted. A better way to write songs has never been invented! As former members of the band Howard Shaft, these three have logged many road hours as well as countless hours on stage. Hailing from North Louisiana, each member of the band has played every conceivable type of music as well as performed under every conceivable circumstance. Drawing from a very diverse pool of musical influence, the Southern Salvation delivers tunes from every spectrum from the musical universe. Playing with a sense of the avant-garde, the General's guitar playing as well as his vocal stylings remind one of Frank Zappa meets Colonel Bruce Hampton; frantic, yet played and sung with the coolness of a great storyteller. Captain James Cook adopts a bass style that reminds one of Oteil Burbridge and Jaco with a decidedly southern flair; groove, finesse and power. On drums, Derek Mixon is a rhythmic mind reader adept at the basic 4/4, but unafraid at any moment to take the groove machine on the ride of its life. Decidedly Southern in scope and make up, the fellers that make up the Southern Salvation are never ashamed to show their roots. Many songs are constructed from southern ideals, stories told from a good-ole boy angle. However, in all cases, the freedom of the music is what counts. No ditties, no rules, and no holds barred. |
