Press Reviews
Ahhh, this is SO refreshing!!! This kid is in HIGH SCHOOL???? My goodness!!!! There are some VERY DEADLY SERIOUS chops happening here! He has a remarkably advanced grasp of chord and improvisational theory and application! The right hand is obviously great, with a fluid feel and relentlessly even 16ths coupled to great swing quantization, but even more impressive to me is the left hand, dancing delightfully around with rich, full, tight voicings but a feather touch. The trio has the stratospheric energy and nimble deftness of the Chick Corea Akoustic Band, the hipster soul of the Harry Connick Jr Tio, and the gritty, venerable soul of the Vince Guaraldi Trio! The bassist has a wonderful attack curve, getting plenty of articulation, yet retaining plenty of power. Very rich, expressive tone. The drummer has a terrific touch, the meter is rock solid, but leavened by a graceful right hand and interesting patter with the left. The ride has a lot of nuance and variation. Some nice inverted backbeat diving through. My only critique of the ensemble at all is there are some times where the drums are a litle heavy on the left foot. This could be a simple as a miking or mix issue, but it got a bit strident in a couple of places. I'm sure that it's a non-issue live. This is a VERY mature, seasoned sound. I'd love to hear more!!! We only get one piddlin' song? Poo! MORE! MORE!!!Cheers!Phil Traynorwww.mp3.com/llarionwww.stashmagazine.com |
