Press Reviews
Detritus is the debut release for the fledgling UK label and distribution
company, Fleshmadeword, who specialise in rhythmic power noise ala Ant-Zen
and more dark ambient/electronic music. A new labels first release is
always a bit of a gamble how it seems to have paid off with this fantastic
example of drill n' bass/rhythmic industrial/breakbeat release. Detritus
mix a fusion break neck drill n' bass and distorted neo-techno beats,
occasional dark ambient structures, spoken word samples, beautifully
hypnotic choral segments and lavish yet subtle neo-classical arrangements
which pull together the relentless barrage of beats seamlessly. At present
there is an endless supply of beat driven industrial noise and dark drill n'
bass releases with labels like ant-Zen, Hymen and Hands Productions going
from strength to strength and new labels such as Ad Noiseam putting out some
quality releases, however with this seemingly endless amount of releases
occasionally they all come a bit samey with noting much standing out,
however what Detritus have managed to do is put together a collection of
tracks that are predominately beat driven and avoid the almost compulsive
inclusion of noise and overly distorted rhythms to create an album that is
as hard and pounding as its predecessors but has an incredibly fresh sound
to it. Perhaps it's the collusion of perfectly written and structured
melodically rhythmic beats and classical excursions, or perhaps its jut that
Detritus have pillaged the very best and most crucial elements of the power
noise/drill n' bass scene and have forged them into a sound of their very
own. Whatever the reason is, Detritus has found its way into the small pile
of releases that gets a regular play when I'm not reviewing, especially when
I'm driving.
With this being the first release from this label; you have to expect great
things next, as 'Sense/Martyr' has positioned itself firmly at the top end
of this genre with the greatest of ease and will no doubt have Ant-Zen and
the like panicking that their strangle hold on the scene looks to be
weakening. |
