Artist description
Ramnath Kaushik has learnt Carnatic music from several gurus including vidwans T.K. Govinda Rao and Neyveli Santhanagopalan. He is also a primarily self-taught artiste, guided by the giants of the previous eras. Shankar Venkataraman was introduced to Carnatic music through his training in the flute. He later picked up vocal music largely self-taught, considering Semmangudi Srinivasa Iyer as a manasika guru. He has been mentored by vidwans O.S. Thyagarajan, Neyveli Santhanagopalan and Madurai Sundar. Ram and Shankar have been referred to as the “Columbus Brothers” and have performed several concerts in the U.S. along with Shivkumar Kalyanaraman, including 4-hour concerts. They are known for their vibrant, strong voices, and a relaxed, highly traditional and classical style of singing. They render outstanding alaapanas and neraval, with heavy use of gamakas. Shivkumar Kalyanaraman learnt violin from top violinists Sri Peri Sreeramamurthy (Hyderabad) and Smt T. Rukmini (Madras) and vocal training from Shri M N Subramaniam and Shri BRC Iyengaar. . He has accompanied visiting artistes like Ravi Kiran, T R Subramaniam, P N Krishnamurthy, and Ashok Ramani. He has performed several concerts in USA with the Columbus brothers. He is developing an online carnatic krithi archive with songs in realaudio, MP3 formats and notations: Search for “Shivkumar Kalyanaraman” on Yahoo! |
