    Artist History
Rising from the ashes of the Naples Hardcore scene, Ars Phoenix became the first of the the fiercely independent-minded community to embrace drum machines and synthesizers, while still incorporating the lush and varied guitar stylings of its indie rock/post-hardcore roots. Fans of Ars Phoenix frontman, Jonathan Glover's previous band, Kilborough (17), will be familiar with this mixture of electronic atmospheres, layered guitars, ambient synths, caustic noise, and driving rhythms. However, Ars Phoenix has put more emphasis on electronics and pop oriented song structures, resulting in a sound of darkwave-ish synthpop with indie-rock sensibilities. The first full length from Ars Phoenix, "Teen Movie Soundtrack", is a varied affair of melancholy, synth-driven indie/electro rock that ranges from the somber and melodic to the chaotic and quirky.

Ars Phoenix - Teen Movie Soundtrack: Rock meets techno here but its not Electroclash. Eno-y and Cabaret Voltaire-ish vocals and proggy sounds have the emotional gravity of Simon and Garfunkle (as on the Danling Conversation, 1996). Shimmery guitar lends a thread of psych-rock, while drum machine adds a slight disco vibe. Soundtrack warrants attention. (JS) Punk Planet #57 *** Ars Phoenix "Teen Movie Soundtrack" - This CD begins with a minimal tune on the theme of love, which lead me to assume there would be a similar One AM Radio-sty;le sound through out. However, (Ars Phoenix) mixes it up a bit with new wave synth-pop played slow and mellow. The whole thing is very affected and a good amunt of it reminds me of Soft Cell (especially on "Enter Twilight"). Anyway, the songs on here capture the sultry combination of the two styles well. After these nine tracks, you get a good idea of what this band is giving out. (LO)HeartattaCk #38 *** "Your music is holy. Hallelujah! - your pal, Lonesome" Lonesome Wyatt (Lonesome Wyatt and the Holy Spooks)- 4/03 "Enter Twilight: An etherial yet disturbing jaunt. Impressively produced track with dark lyrics that burrow into your head with haunting tenacity. There is no discernable melody to this track. Rather it is more of an auditory escapade that shows that the creator of this work(ars phoenix) is more concerned with the emotional and visceral response of the listener. A capably produced track from an artist who does not appear to cow-tow to conventional music creation and would rather the listener make their own judgements. One complaint would be that the vocals seem overridden by the synths in spots making them harder to comprehend. Overall this piece shows a talented, capable artist that wants to evoke emotion in his audience and succeeds." - Flat Atom (5/03)
