Thatch -Demo CD -'Overdose'
Date: 07 JUN 1999
Author: MIKE GILL
When I first saw this band live in the first Morgan's Cat/Radio Park battle of the bands, I was taken aback by the fact that they have a definite stage show, how can a new band have that much confidence?
The lead vocalist has a sleaze-rebel attitude/presence (Bottle of 'Tassies' in hand...) and the band fit in well with that image, an image that is sustainable and not over the top, an image that could easily be mistaken as arrogance, yet after meeting the band, you'll realise that they are just normal down to earth people, who love what they do and take their 'hobby' seriously.
This conflicting imagery threw me a bit when listening to their demo-CD 'Overdose', this offering can be described as having a dual personality and feel for both sides of rock 'n roll, the good and the bad.
Track 1, the title song, is a standard mellow to hard rock song, with nice ups and downs to keep the listener interested, nothing too technical and easy on the ear, even when the choruses pick up. Tidy, short, enhancing lead breaks, cut through and feedback into the key of the song, adding some nice backing to the rest of the band. Vocals are crisp and upfront.
Track 2, 'Sanity' takes you on a psychotic rollercoaster ride, the chorus is classic "You gotta be a little bit crazy, sometimes more than crazy, you gotta be a little bit crazy, to keep your sanity"... and this echoes true to the song structure, mad, fast and totally mad. There is a cool solo bass groove break after the first chorus and then again after the second chorus, the second picking up the tempo and launching you into the never. The vocals in this track fit like a glove, hard and powerful.
Track 3, 'What if I hate You', is a Sex Pistols/Ramones, 3 bar chords-type composition, which is reminiscent of the old punk era, the loudhailer effect in verse 3 is a nice added effect and breaks the monotony.
Track 4, 'See if I Care' threw me a bit, although the bassline was different, the chord structure was almost identical to track 3 (was this intentional?), it was almost if track 4 was a continuation of track three, if this was intentional then okay, but if it wasn't, the band should try to shuffle their tracks around on the final product to give a bit of variation for the buyer. Although shuffling could've made a difference, it's a bad reflection on the band to have included this track, even the key of the song was the same of that of track 3. Tsk, tsk...
Track 5, 'Take Me Away' is the crowning glory of this demo, a ballad, beautifully executed with catchy arpeggiated chord picking/strumming and changes that install instant humility and attention when listened to. Jay's vocals are controlled and reflect an inner pain that no one could possibly understand or imagine, a possible comparison to this song, (forgive me guys) is Pink floyd's 'Another Brick in The Wall -Part 1' (Minus the slow tempo), if anything, this song deserves the full treatment in terms of a shit-hot producer and cleaner overall sound.
Overdose is good, not the hottest production, but then it is a demo, certain tracks move and amuse, overall a nice first try. Well-packaged (even though it's done by hand) and a tidy addition to your South African music collection. I wait in anticipation to hear a full-length, well polished album.
