Artist History
Zen Leavings - The CD by shakuhachi perfroming artist Marcus Seifu Grandon. . . "Zen Leavings" is an undertaking aimed at preserving and presenting ahistorical record of shakuhachi sound from ancient songs right up tothe beginning of the 21st century. Some songs are new compositions thatare drawn from the experience of living in Japan. Many of thetechniques and pieces come out of classical (Tozan) and religious(Myoan) schools. The elongated breaths of Suizen (Blowing Zen) arefound throughout the recording. Other songs explore Honkyoku (sacredsongs), Kokyu (ancient songs) and Gaikyoku (modern songs, after 1868).There are examples demonstrating original post-modern interpretations, some of which are played with an improvisational spirit inspired bytraditional tunes. There are also the inextricable influences of modernjazz, blues and rock on various songs, a cross-pollination experimentwhich may have a certain kind of unique appeal. "Inside the Cloud"takes the shakuhachi to unexplored territories using some of theworld's most cutting edge equipment and technology.
Lotus Pond is a meditation CD recorded with American guitarist Henry Bahrou. There has been teriffic response to this music from massage therapists, meditators, and psychologists specializing in stress relief. The music is serene and affects the nervous system in a calm and pleasing way.
W.E. is my latest CD. It is experimental shakuhachi music that brings the shakuhachi strongly into the 21st century pushing the envelop of what the instrument can do. |
