LOVE ALIEN is a NYC based independent internationally touring act. Created by Jill M. (of NY) and Thomas Simon (of Vienna, Austria),who met on Avenue A in the East Village. - Great Britain-based Network of the World recently called LOVE ALIEN "...one of the most promising up-&-comers of the N.Y. underground scene" Since '95 they've released three CD's & a single on their own label(Endorphin Records), toured the US six times (with additional shows in Canada in '98), & toured in Europe three times ( with an additional appearance in Tel Aviv,Israel, in '99). Three songs off their '97 release "Lost Dark & Insane" are on the soundtrack of independent feature film "Copy Shop", a black comedy which stars Jill in the role of Rita, a rock 'n'roller who's killed her drummer and needs a new one - directed by five-time Emmy winner William Electric Black, " Copy Shop" is currently in post-production. Their last release "Blue Planet preview", available on the internet at amazon.com, has received airplay on college and commercial radio stations worldwide. Two cuts are on mp3.com. Last year they played on the West Capitol steps in Wash. D.C. at a rally for voter rights, at benefits for the Independent Media Center-NY' & in this past summer's Woodstock event, SpiritStock. They also performed at benefits for WTC victims and firefighter's families and for the March of the Americas and Kosovo Relief (L.I., N.Y.). Press Reviews
NEW YORK NEWSDAY: "LOVE THAT FUSION - Love Alien, a group led by vocalist Jill Margolis and guitarist Thomas Simon, is onto something new. Their band is like a fusion of Screaming Trees and Sophie B Hawkins. They have a slightly grungy psychedelic sound, and Margolis has a sensuous stage presence and breathy vocals that seem to owe a bit to performance art. It's an intriguing and original sound that is often riveting." CMJ - "Take Pat Benatar, cross her with Siouxie Sioux, dress her in a thrift store burial gown and the result might look and sound something like Jill Margolis, LOVE ALIEN's resident goth-freak goddess. Margolis has been garnering rave reviews ( and probably more than her share of stalkers) as frontperson for this busy NYC combo. The band itself musically quotes everyone from Echo and the Bunnymen to Love and Rockets, filtering it all through a Bauhausian psychedelic vibe. ...These two disparate elements - band and vocalist - combine to create a sound all their own, call it trip-grunge or maybe grunge hop...if this wiry ensemble can capitalise on it's considerable strenghts, they might just escape the gravitational pull of N. Y.'s dark underbelly and explode into the limelight." JERSEY BEAT /Feb'99 LOVE ALIEN - Blue Planet Preview (Endorphin Records) Grunged-up, highly ominous and uniquely psychedelicized Gothic-style sonic rumbling. Jill Margolis' haunting, purring moan and Thomas Simon's husky growl trade off on the vocals, complementing each other beautifully. Simon's searing, fiercely lingering guitar rifts vividly create a calmly flowing, throbbing, very brooding and sinister aural witch's brew that's every bit as creepy and compelling as it ought to be. ---------------------INFINITY PRESS (Tulsa, OK)Sept.'99: Spat out from the bowels of the dark big city are LOVE ALIEN the newest import from New York. And they sound exactly how the gritty grinding city should sound, like a delicate midnight trainwreck. But there is really nothing too strange about them - their songs are pushed together by trademark nasty detuned guitar lines and Austrian singer Thomas Simon's gravelly baritone voice...as drummer Lior Shulman sparks the music up with his bright notes and amazing chops. The bands secret weapon, is exotic vocalist Jill Margolis, who spins together a chanteuse style of glimmer and fury, and commands a stage presence of erotic force... Amid a new generation of women rockers who refuse to... brush their hair stands Margolis, a holdback from a rock star mold which required a woman to look her best, yet have the talent to back up her flawless image. The intersection of Margolis' sexy musical image and the rest of the band's musical ability is the starting point of LOVE ALIEN's exact sound. The songs throw together the best elements of each player, pulling torwards Simon's deep vocals in one chorus while anchored down in Gehin's throbbing bass the next. Margolis' songs are equally exitable, as she drives her sticky-sweet vocals into the heart of the dingy LOVE ALIEN rock machine. ...come see the excitement first hand. But be prepared to melt under the white light of Margolis' voice and the blistering noise of Simon and the rest of LOVE ALIEN. (J.Zielazinski) ---Check website for more national and foreign press! |
