Artist History
The group formerly known as MORGANA LEFAY... Were originally named after the mysterious witch in the legend of King Arthur and his Knights of the Round Table, and the band's interest in the supernatural that exists in both the occult and the real world can easily be seen in their lyrics. It is via the impossible process of trying to define the unexplainable that one creates thoughts and questions; combined with LEFAY's heavy music the imagery and magic of the occult plane can be felt and heard.... On New Year's Eve 1986 Jonas Soderlind, Joakim Lundberg, Tony Eriksson and Stefan Jonsson decided to start a band, planting a seed that would later grow to become Morgana Lefay, although at this time they called themselves Damage. In the spring of 1988 Tony gave a copy of their demo tape to a friend, Charles Rytkönen, and persuaded him to join as vocalist, even though he was also at the time in a band named Sepher Jezirah together with Tommi Karppanen (soon to join Morgana Lefay) and Christer Andersson (Tad Morose). In 1989 Stefan Jonsson left the newly rechristened Morgana Lefay and Tommi Karppanen replaced him as guitarist, following which the group recorded their debut album. This was the totally self-financed 'Symphony Of The Damned', which was issued as a limited edition of only 537 copies. A further line-up change occurred in the summer of 1991, when, after recording material for a forthcoming demo in FS-studios (Soderhamn, Sweden) Joakim Lundberg departed and was replaced by Joakim Heder on bass. Some months later the newly completed demo was sent to several different labels, eventually resulting in a contract with Black Mark Production. Deeming the demo to be of master quality, a further track - a psychedelic piece entitled 'Knowing Just As I' - was added to it to make up a full album. This piece became the title track of the record, which was released in 1993 and received excellent reviews worldwide. In the autumn of the same year the group went into WaveStation Studio (Ljusne, Sweden) to record their next album, 'The Secret Doctrine', and toured Germany and Switzerland with Invocator and Cemetary just prior to its release in December 1993. The album was made record of the month in Rock Hard (Germany) and Metal Hammer (Greece) and achieved second spot in Metal Hammer (Germany). In February 1994 they played at the Zeppelingala (Swedish Metal Music Awards) together with Paradise Lost, Skintrade and Clawfinger. In April they recorded their first promo video, for a song entitled 'Rooms Of Sleep', while in June Tommi Karppanen left the band. Needing a guitarist, Peter Grehn (Fantasmagoria) joined as a stand-in on a tour of Finland and for festival dates in Stockholm (the Water Festival) and Cologne (PopKomm). At the end of the summer Daniel Persson became the new guitarist and the group entered the studio again to record the 'Sanctified' album, which was released in February 1995, promoted with a video clip for the song 'To Isengard'. In May they performed as part of the Black Mark Tour together with Cemetary, Memento Mori and Tad Morose, while in July they also shot a video for 'In The Court Of The Crimson King'. Also that summer they played shows on the Rock City Tour in Sweden with Colorblind and NME Within. A German TV-crew filmed Morgana Lefay during the tour and also in the studio. In September they recorded four new songs for a compilation album of their work, 'Past Present Future', which was released in October 1996 to coincide with a European tour with Gamma Ray, following which they started working on new material for their next album proper, 'Maleficium'. This was recorded in July/August 1996 and released in November, with the title track also recorded as a video, while early 1997 saw the group on a headlining tour of Germany and Switzerland with Solitude Aeturnus (USA) and Brainstorm (Germany) in support. In September that year Jonas, Joakim and Daniel moved to Stockholm, necessitating their departure from the band, as 600 kilometres was deemed a long way to travel for rehearsals! Tony and Charles were determined to continue and recruited three new members, including the aforementioned Peter Grehn, making the following new line-up: Charles Rytkönen - vocals Tony Eriksson - Guitar Peter Grehn - Guitar Mikael Åsentorp - Bass Robin Engström - Drums They started working on new songs immediately, and at the same time left Black Mark Production. A subsequent protracted legal struggle then forced not only a change of name to LEFAY but also resulted in almost two years of total silence from the band. This is about to change with the release of their brand new album, 'The Seventh Seal', which was recorded between August and October 1998 under a new contract with Modern Music. |
