Artist History
John was born and raised in Scunthorpe, Lincolnshire and after leaving school in the early seventies, he became heavily involved in the vibrant local folk music scene. Whilst Scunthorpe is only a small town, it has produced a number of well known acoustic folk/folk rock artists including the world renowned guitarist Martin Simpson (www.watershed-arts.com): Iain Matthews (ex- Fairport Convention and Matthews Southern Comfort fame - www.bio.vu.nl/home/vwielink/matthews/matthews.htm) and the Amazing Blondel (www.soldigit.net/gaudela/blondel/main.html).
He has performed regularly from this time as a solo artist and as part of a number of duo’s and groups. His first partnership was with highly rated fiddler and multi-instrumentalist Andy Cleveland (now residing in Virginia Beach, USA - www.leafpile.com/kelly.htm). He then teamed up with Andy Hatt, a consummate guitarist who has also provided arrangements for and recorded with one of the UK’s finest female singers Vikki Clayton - www.kinrowan.com/clayton.html).
Numerous folk club and festival appearances have been made over the intervening years in the UK (both solo and duo) as well as in Germany as part of the ceilidh band, the Stubblejumpers.
In 1987, John relocated to Swansea in Wales and continued to perform as a solo artist on the local folk music scene as well as with the ceilidh band, Celtic Sound. In 1996 he teamed up with singer, guitarist and bass player Nick James and this current partnership is going from strength to strength. Some of Nick’s solo work can be found at www.mp3.com/artists/21/nick_james.html and some of the duo’s output can be found at www.mp3.com/artists/24/john_davies__nick_james.html. John and Nick hope to release their own CD in the not too distant future.
