Artist description
The major third, the fifth, the minor seventh, the fourth…each creates an affect all its own. The combination of these and other intervals, tone color, dynamics and rhythm bring worlds of emotion into being. I see these elements as the building blocks of my work, whether that work utilizes techniques of the past or present, or uses a style associated with concert stage or dance hall. My eclectic style reflects my being raised in an environment full of musical influences from Mozart to Theloneous Monk, from Perotin to Charlie Parker, from William Byrd to Beethoven to Boulez. Biblical themes appear in my work, sometimes blatantly, sometimes as an undercurrent. Some works utilize the emotive power of the intervals, rhythms and tone color as the featured elements of the work. Frankly, others may make you want to dance. No matter what the influences and techniques used to create a work, the purpose is the same - to touch the heart. |
