Artist History
Carlos was born in Zacatecas, Mexico. He has dedicated himself to music since he was 8 years old. He began playing guitar; later switching to drums. Off on his own in Mexico City at a very young age, he became a studio musician, where he played for such singers as: Luis Miguel, Roberto Carlos, Armando Manzanero, Pedro Vargas, Alvaro Torres, Amanda Miguel, y Lupita Valencia. Once he decided to go on the road and play his own music live, he found out how many people recognized his name without knowing what he looked like. He has been considered one of the best drummers of Mexico. Completely taken by watching Jaco Pastorius on video, Carlos decided to finish up some music (to present to Jaco, which he didn't know yet), save up some $$$, find Jaco, play his music to him, and record it with Jaco. It worked!!! The result was Essence - Last Flight (pick up a copy if you can at various on-line cd stores). He got to know Jaco very well over the next few years (until Jaco passed on). At this moment he is in NYC, playing for various musical groups, covering various non-conventional musical styles. He has played in many venues in NYC, including Birdland, the Blue Note, CBGB, The Elbow Room, and the Lincoln Center. He currently operates Carmace Records - NYC, is playing live gigs around NYC, and has several new projects in the works. |

Press Reviews
'This was a real surprise. For about a month now, Nestor Louis has been trying to hand me a copy of this release, which was given to him by vocalist, Rudy Victorino (SANGRE TAINA J&N Records) who was seeking an opinion on the product for Carlos Cervantes. For those of you not familiar with Carlos, he was the manager at Variety Recording Studios here in NYC. Carlos also happens to be a well versed trap drummer who has the distinction of having recorded with the late, great bassist, Jaco Pastorious. On DISCOVERING MY UNIVERSE Carlos highlights his talents with a little help from Jazz violinist Michael Urbaniak, master conguero Papo Pepin, bongocero and campanero extraodinaire Jose Mangual, Jr., as well as Piro Rodriguez (trumpet), Nelson Hernandez (tenor sax), Peter Adams (keyboards), and Al McDowell (bass). This is not your typical Latin Jazz fare, but a fusion of Latin Jazz with many other forms of Jazz. Carlos certainly learned his lessons well while with Jaco and has incorporated those lessons into the Latin Jazz idiom. If your looking for something different in the Latin Jazz vein do give DISCOVERING MY UNIVERSE a listen.' George M. Rivera -- La Musica - new jazz (www.lamusica.com/newjazz.htm) |
