Artist History
Babaloo was formed in 1995 in a dark and dingy basement in Jamaica Plain and came to be the first ever PUNK MAMBO-HARDCORE JUJU BAND. Since their first show Babaloo has packed parties, clubs and carnivals with clergymen, gangsters, artists, acrobats and loonies of all kinds. Babaloo has opened for acts such as Burning Spear, Maceo Parker, and in Churchill, Manitoba, the polar bear capital of the world, played with Collective Soul. Babaloo's songs have also appeared in the films "Next Stop, Wonderland" and Allan Piper's "Starving Artists. "Babaloo plays extensively in Boston, New York City, Vermont, Maine, New Hampshire and visiting Key West and the arctic circle every now and then. |

Press Reviews
I'm In the Nude For Love Butcher's Ghost Records
"Maybe it's the recent spate of soggy Boston spring weather, but the upbeat and tangy sounds of Babaloo are just the soothing balm for the brain that this girl needs. I'm In The Nude for Love, Babaloo's new CD, offers up their signature mix of eclectic musical styles including, but not limited, to Soukous, Samba, Reggae, Bossa Nova, and Puerto Rican Dance Hall. This is the kind of music that has two distinct personalities: the musical style personality, and the lyrical personality. Listen to one, the other, or both, and you're sure to enjoy yourself, particularly if you're bilingual. I, sadly, am not, so my review is based almost entirely on the gut feelings evoked by each track and musical style, all of it melding nicely into a magical, musical melting pot. The Soukous tracks -- "Mama," "Doumamé," "Petite Megan" -- are sunny and airy, loaded with bubbly rhythms and delicate guitar loops. Other tracks are more intense and spicy, like the Parranda "Trabalengua" and, my favorite track, "Pepino", a rollicking Puerto Rican Dance Hall track that absolutely demands that you get up and baila, right now, suckah, or get out of the way. Should you crave mellower sounds, the Reggae twang of "Sherkahn" or the soft, up and down rolls of the Rumba "Alé Alé" should satisfy nicely, and you shouldn't miss the Bossa Nova strains and laughable lyrics of "Lollo": 'For you missy you see my apology now./ I didn't mean to cause you brain hemoragy now,/ when I bashed your head in with my Orangina." Need an education in Afro/Caribbean musical styles? Want to feel like you're on vacation somewhere sunny without stocking up on SPF 35? Then check out Babaloo, sit back and just relax -- you can't help but have a good time." Ciderjane, GroovyStylie.com

"What comes out is a sound not unlike a neighborhood block party in a lively part of town at the start of a three-day weekend. The group's debut CD, last year's Punk Mambo! (Butcher's Ghost), lives up to its title, with a mélange of horn-fueled, percussion-stoked ska, samba, and calypso. And the punk part? Well, the punk part is that they've managed to pull it off in grand fashion."-Johnathan Perry,Boston Phoenix "Samba Formosa is one of those songs you wish wouldn't end...."-NYC411"[Hardcore Juju] is so crazy, that my dad even likes it. Babaloo uses the usual guitar, bass, and drums but also uses a variety of kazoos, trumpets, whistles, and other unusual instruments.... Definitely see Babaloo (they play around Boston a ton) and pick this up." -Just Another Scene http://www.justanotherscene.com/musicreviews/babaloo.htm "Babaloo are a dream of a band, eclectic, different, tuneful and as original in execution as any new music I have heard this year.... There is a joy about the band that is totally addictive.... In other words the rich exotic stuff that makes life worth living." --limeygit, Indiemonkey http://www.indiemonkey.com/reviews/ad/babaloo.html |
