Artist description
What do you get when you add one headstrong, idealistic, and extremely talented young singer/songwriter who has grown up listening to a wide variety of kinds of music to a middle aged acoustic guitarist, classically trained as a musician with 35 years of playing guitar in every setting from as a solo performer to a ska band with influences from Jimi Hendrix to Michael Hedges? Then to complicate the mix, you add one more ingredient - they are daughter and father. Under normal circumstances, you'd expect an occasional song together at an open mike and a healthy distance whenever discussions of music came up. This isn't a normal circumstance. The answer to the equation is Alexis d. The tension that comes from being family brings an extra element of creativity to the music. The closeness of being family brings an almost uncanny ability to blend in harmonies and in musical direction.
Alexis d has recently relocated to Santa Barbara from Albany, NY where they were a staple on the local acoustic music scene. They have opened for Patty Larkin and the Nields, have shared stages with performers as diverse as Tony Trischka and Vance Gilbert, and have headlined at nearby venues like Cafe Lena's and the Eight Step, and far-flung ones like Java Joe's in Des Moines. Dave Magnuson of The Indie Zone said "Albany, New York is definitely lucky to have talent like d visiting their local club scene. I highly recommend this CD to any folk rock fan." in his review of their debut CD. Now, they're in California and looking forward to sharing their east coast flavor with west coast audiences.

Press Reviews
"So what is it about the duo that makes them special? How about the amazing guitar work by Roy Donkin? This is some truly well written, classically influenced strumming - no 3 chord folk music here. Or was it the thoughtful lyrics and beautiful voice of Alexis Donkin? This is CD is filled from start to end with VERY good contemporary folk music. Now, to add to my amazement, Alexis and Roy are not husband and wife, but father and daughter. Never before have I heard such a strong voice in a teenager, nor have I seen a family that works together so well in composing. It's quite obvious that Roy's expert guitar playing was a major theme in his household - Alexis has mimicked his devotion with her lyrical and singing skill. They stand up very favorably to major label artists like Paula Cole, Indigo Girls, or perhaps the Cowboy Junkies. Roy has a strong classical influence, and maybe a little jazziness from time to time. His tone and style almost remind me of Adrian Legg, although not quite as intricate. Albany, New York is definitely lucky to have talent like them visiting their local club scene. I highly recommend this CD to any folk rock fan. Reviewed: May 16, 1999. Rating: ****1/2, Dave Magnuson, The Indie Zone |
