SADLY, MY ONLY REVIEW... FROM THE KIND FELLAS AT RAW42:elleybean is a d'n'b workout more aptly called "drum 'n' voice", where vocal samples take the place of instruments. it's a great idea for a sound source, and while it smacks of novelty, it's done well enough that the song stands on its own as interesting. the samples are fairly short and pitched so they can be used as tones. it's a fairly complex composition that borders between cute and interesting.gurgit ate is also a patterned track that also uses voice/mouth samples, especially belches, except that even the drum sounds are vocal samples. again, affect plays with the pitch to piece together extremely musical passages that are fairly complex in places and sound great. the percussion on this track is a bit more basic and works well, but doesn't quite measure up to the melodies. the ending takes a whole different turn. similar to elleybean but it works better in many ways except the percussion. it'd be nice to combine the two.sphagnum pete is a straight-forward d'n'b workout built on bloop and bleep melodies. it moves along really well, showing the squarepusher influences. it's sparsely written with emphasis on the rhythms and patterns over complex melodies. the only downside is the abrupt ending, which several of the other songs suffer from.froiche is what affect calls his "autechre" tune, referring to it as ambience. definitely not ambient in the old school sense by any means. the percussion on this track is wicked, with beats panned hard to the left and right, which makes it a great ride with headphones. everything is done with short, percussive beats and tones, with plenty of space between them despite the complex patterns and swift bpm. our best description would be "futuristic gamelon." sadly, the track just ends in a way that seems more cut off than purposeful, which mars an otherwise fantastic piece. our favorite by far.affect has a lot of potential showing - the percussion is pretty interesting and fairly original on some tracks, and a quick survey of the songs show a definite progression in song-writing and composing skills as well as production. it's interesting that froiche seems to be one of his less favorite songs, as we found it the most engaging track. combining it along with the d'n'b form might produce something really ground-breaking, so we hope affect will continue in these directions. |
