Sanaiya at the Dragonfly
By: Carol Soudah
Lots of bands try to get a groove going. Lots of bands hope to achieve a tight sound. Few bands achieve it really well. Sanaiya is one of those bands.
This female-led group jams and grooves with a unique fusion of passionate guitar-powered music reminiscent of the jazz and funk bands from decades past. Guitarist Alex is dripping with Santana-esque inspiration with his Latin flavored guitar riffs that take the audience on a ride, guiding the band's sound and pumping the crowd.
Of course, the band's sound is what it is because of sweet sounding lead singer Minh. Funny thing is, I saw Minh wandering around the club before their set. She was demure, composed, and conservatively dressed, just another person in the crowd - so I thought. Next thing I know, she climbs up on stage, peels off her oversized coat, grabs the mic and puts Gwen Stafani to shame. Minh's skilled voice and passion merges Annie Lennox and Aretha (yes, the diva herself), hitting the high notes without missing a beat. She's a small girl with a massive stage presence and a voice that most of us would kill for.
And speaking of girl dominance, there's more. I'm used to a bass player standing back and giving a subtle beat. I'm also used to a bass player being MALE. Not here. Bass player Maral can out-bass any dude with her funky "slapping" sound. She takes center stage and counterbalances the guitar sound. This was especially awesome with their signature song "Rainbow Delight," a catchy disco tune that highlights Minh's voice and the funky bass laced throughout.
They went on with the 70's themed "Everlasting love" and one of my favorites, "Don't Do Me This Way," a dynamic song with lots of attitude. Percussionist Chuck and drummer Carlos rock on the congas, timbales, and drums bringing a unique world music rhythm to the band.
What's cool is that Sanaiya encompasses five very solid, talented musicians, each contributing really well to the overall sound. They'll do even better by making more use of the congas and timbales, which will add an awesome Middle Eastern and African essence to the music. And by balancing and blending the percussion, drums, guitar, and bass rhythms with those sweet vocal melodies, Sanaiya should continue to be a mainstay in the L.A. music scene.
My suggestion? GO SEE THIS BAND. Sanaiya plays all over town at the usual L.A. hotspots. Check out some tunes at the band's site - geocities.com/grooveband
