Artist description
We are a progressive rock trio out of Ottawa, who try to reconstruct the open-minded, musical diversty that once existed in the late 60's and early 70's. We range from 18-19 years of age, and have been playing togeather for almost the complete duration of our musical careers. We like to experiment with unfamiliar scales, chord voicings, and time signatures to create unique and creative music which is instrumentally based. We have been togeather for 5 years now, under various names, with two former members, who still to this day remain good friends, and help contribute to our creativity. |

Artist History
The band was founded in 1995 by drummer Veljko Bajagic and guitarist Dan Mendelsohn but was officially named Red Beryl in 1997. However, Mendelsohn and Von Wurden did play together before meeting up with any of the other members, doing several shows in Sir Winston Public School playing such songs as Purple Haze, Sweet Home Alabama etc. Bassist, Jake von Wurden, was originally a guitarist/drummer but when he joined the band, was convinced to switch to bass. After several months, the band, which was then known as Spoonfed, decided to fire rhythm-guitarist Menno Versteeg and change its name to Laurel Wreath. This event was shorly followed by the addition of keyboardist Joel Boulvais which led to the immediate departure of vocalist Adam Daudrich. This change of personnel formed what is now Red Beryl. Left without a vocalist, the band became instrumental in their early stages performing two concerts with an original set of several songs (the exceptions being Frankenstein by the Edgar Winter Group, Wring that Neck by Deep Purple, and Iron Butterfly Theme by Iron Butterfly). The band was then in search of a vocalist for several months until Bajagic and Mendelsohn discovered the possibility of vocals by either von Wurden or Boulvais. After a few trials, it was decided upon a lineup which included Joel Boulvais as both vocalist and keyboardist. The influences of the music range from early blues/rock bands such as Led Zeppelin, Deep Purple, Taste, Coloseum and Cream to progressive rock bands such as Yes, King Crimson, and Pink Floyd and then to fusion masters like Jan Hammer, Chick Corea, McLaughlin, etc. topping it off with the added gloomy touch of Black Sabbath. |
