Press Reviews
DJ Sols latest track is hard to classify:it's a very atmospheric piece of music, but it doesn't even remotely sound like a lush GLR style tune. It's simply too dark to fall inthat category. But dark doesn't mean "hard"here, it's just the mood that sits somewhere between sinister and melancholy. This vibe is mainly created by some ambient pad sounds, FX and a strange weeping female voice. This vocal element is a little bit overdone on the whole track, sometimes less is more, but it's not really a problem. There could also be some more variation of the melody, it's always on the verge of being too simple - but it works. The bassline is rather simple too, it just works as a lo-frequency foundation for the pads. Additionaly there's a deep pounding sound, somewhere between a low percussion instrument and a bassound, that creates this nice "there's evil is knocking at the door" feeling... The tune is driven by a chopped up old-skool break (funky drummer?), which is rolling and grooving along quite nicely, but lacks a bit of punch. It just sounds too pitched-up to provide the right amount of hard "smack" this track screams for. I think some simple layered clean beats would do the job to add some more pressure Production quality is ok on this track, I didn't discover unwanted noise, hiss etc. or any other major flaws. But the overall loudness of the track is fairly low, so it definiteley deserves some more post-production with the appropriate EQing and compression. To sum it up: a cool moody track that has some very original ideas in it. Maybe the good thing about this track is, that the combination of rather simplistic elements is able to create such a strong atmosphere. Productionwise Sol has to improve, but if you compare this to his first track "Recess" - he has made a big step in the right direction. Anybody who is interested in dnb that is not really mainstream and that doesn't necessarily kills dancefloors should check it out. |
