Artist description
The Amazing Tin Can Band features the tincanarimba, a chromatic mallet instrument consisting entirely of tin cans played with chopsticks. The tincanarimba is mounted on a crate along with three paddle drums ("Sonic Smash" rackets) and other percussion.The tincanarimba was created in 1996 by Sharon Anway, percussionist and private music instructor. It has been featured in the local Sturgis Falls parade (Cedar Falls, Iowa) as well as the "New Directions in Music Education" conference held at Michigan State University in September of 2000. The tincanarimba was also featured in the December 1998 journal Experimental Musical Instruments, the "You Make-a My Weekend" Caribbean music festival in Rock Island, IL in August of 2000, and numerous teacher training workshops and children's concerts held at the University of Northern Iowa and elsewhere.Accompanist on synthesizer and whoop whistle is Carolyn Hildebrandt.The Amazing Tin Can Band performs familiar songs featuring the tincanarimba and seeks to publicize the tincanarimba as an inexpensive, fun instrument for children and adults. |
