From Carbon 14, Issue #18: Man, I wish they would bottle whatever all these bands in Texas are drinking and mass distribute it. They must be ingesting some magical rock’n’roll elixir down there because I never hear a foul note emanate from that part of the country. It’s either that or all the truck stop speed. Slum City is a trio made up of two cute girls and one lucky guy with an early West Coast punk vibe, not unlike the Avengers, that made this reviewer pogo around the room like a Superball. The songs on this EP are full of dual female vocals, chorus soaked guitars that wail out on overdrive, bouncy bass and a surf back beat that sounds like it was recorded in the garage. This is the kinda band that you want to see in a dive club with 100 or so of your closest, sweatiest, drunken friends. The state of Texas keeps on trucking, with Slum City at the wheel of the semi. - Peter Santa Maria From MRR: Shuffle right on down to Slum City proper and gape at all the colorful inhabitants that dwell there, living hard, driving fast, Punk 'n' sleaze in the style that I associate with the Mortville label, cranked out from two dames and a token male (they're equal-opportunity employers, see). "Hot Rod," "Kiss of Death," "Throw Down," and "Late for da Show" are the hits here, fast and slow. Witty and retarded. The soundtrack for this Friday night's excitement, if I'm lucky. |
