Artist description
Dandy is a Toronto area pop rock trio—bass, guitar, and drums, with lots of three-part harmony and keyboard/harmonica highlights |
|
Music Style
Dandy’s songs are simple and forthright, guitar pop songs about love and love’s end. Dandy shamelessly draws from the past (the Kinks, the Beatles, the Cars) in the belief that pop is timeless, and rock and roll never dies. |

Musical Influences
Donovan, the Kinks, Weezer, Marcy Playground, and the Flaming Lips |

Artist History
No one knows who originally came up with the idea of forming a band, but there is general consensus that Dandy’s early incarnations were all balls and no talent. The songs were bad and the band names even worse, and before long some of the members dropped out after realizing they just couldn’t play. When the smoke cleared, Brent Smith was the front man, Al Huizenga pounded the keys, Stan Flint fingered the bass, and Corey Fraser beat the drums. The sound improved drastically, and Al and Brent found their song-writing voice as a two-man team, spinning simple, catchy, and honest pop songs. With the help of Concept Management founder Tom O’Connor they quickly became favorites of the Ottawa music scene. But of course, things fall apart; the center cannot hold. Young Stan travelled West, and Brent got a teaching job in Toronto. Dandy took a hiatus. Then, in the summer of 2000, Al followed Brent to the big city, and they began hunting for a new rhythm section. Al’s dad Ryan felt bad for them and volunteered to fill in on bass for a while. Al hopped behind the drum kit (his first love). Everything clicked, Ryan became permanent, and Dandy rocks on as a pop trio. The band is recording its first full album at the HiFi Way studio in Cambridge—look for it in March 2001. |

Press Reviews
"Dandy's hit on something true and real in their music. Though it may not be popular to be happy today with the seeming goal to "be as uninspired and monotonous as possible," these Dandyboys are not afraid to smile." --Silhouette, Jan. 2001 |
