Artist History
Vivian’s Keeper left the safety of the living room for an open mic for the first time in the fall of 1996. Since then, they’ve performed at outdoor festivals for hundreds of sunburned spectators and in tiny towns for handfuls of locals. They’ve played in coffeehouses, frat bars, parking lots and hotel rooms.
Before meeting, both Adam and Joanna had turned to the guitar as accompaniment for their new songwriting ventures. Adam had spent many years playing electric bass in noisy rock bands. Joanna had been singing since she could remember, in church, in choir, and most recently in an a capella trio. Their seemingly incompatible backgrounds became a huge asset as they began to write songs together. They pushed each other to grow in new ways, Adam learning how to sing, Joanna learning half a dozen new instruments.
Some call the sound folk. Some folks say VK sounds like Suzanne Vega, Simon & Garfunkel, or the Cranberries. While they’re flattered, VK tend to agree with Nancy McGuire of hipfish arts and culture monthly, who said “Don’t even try to classify Vivian’s Keeper.”
Firm Believers in "Putting your music where your mouth is," Vivian's Keeper has lent their music to benefits for breast cancer research, the Oregon Midwifery Council, and the Cascade Geographic Society (A group buying and protecting ecologically precious land). VK also helped raise money for Friends of People With AIDS, and for our fledgling local organic co-op, Alberta Cooperative Grocery.
They owe their continuing success to the inspiration of Vivian the Turtle.
