Artist description
Break Of Dawn is five guys that never really pushed to promote themselves within the great "hardcore" infrastructure. Why? Because it never really mattered. What matters is that the music created is the best, most satisfying expression of creativity and thought that could be stirred from the hearts and minds of very different, very genuine friends. At times metal, at times melodic, the dynamics of the music is reflective of the wide range of influences. No one band, poet or artist can be singly pointed to as a reference and with good reason because each person in the band has quite different tastes. |

Artist History
Having changed members more than a few times, it can be said that the sound and musicianship has been ever evolving. Even if these five people stay with the band for the rest of its existence, I doubt the growth and progression of their music will end. Isn't that the fun of it? Who knows where it will go and who would bother to predict? If the muses and fates allow a few albums to surface over the life of this band, you the listener, and in case of a live performance, the participant, will be given a chance to see into the minds and souls of individuals who hope to do it for the right reasons. |

Break of Dawn "Figure Studies in Arsenic and Tears" CD
7/10 - [Onedaysavior]
Relatively chaotic metal with some of the more aggressive emo qualities. This is great because the melodic moments with singing are very emphatic due to the change of pace from blazing tempos and technical riffing. I wish there was more singing though, actually, as the vocals are generally blistering, high screams. Jangly clean guitars and some nutty off-key runs are present, too. At times this is total metal, with thrashy chord progressions and tremolo picking. At the other end of the spectrum, "The Top of the World Meets the Bottom of the Barrel" is an instrumental with tons of harmonies and lightly fuzzed clean tones. The music is never too chaotic for its own good, there are plenty of changes and dissonance, with a few noisy areas, but it maintains structure and direction. The writing is pretty complicated, and the production works perfectly. Nothing seems at all bothersome, the mix is even and the sounds are slick. Great lyrics, really abstract and making use of obscure metaphors, "It's all riding on my head and Atlas dropped the ball again, It's all gesso in cracked canvas light, Just read between the lines in my three-quarter time tonight." The layout is also well done, with tinted matte finished paper and brown ink. I've seen many of these illustrations before, but I'm not sure where. While not the most original thing, the talented musicianship makes it happen. It's only a 6 track EP, so I'm looking for more in the future.

So much hype has surrounded this Rochester band but I had never heard them. Everyone drops them in the same bucket with bands like Creation Is Crucifixion, Dillinger Escape Plan, Drowningman, etc., which for the most part is up my alley. And I definitely dig Break of Dawn! These guys play sick metallic hardcore/metal that is buzzsaw sharp on the edges and right on target in the center. There is a strong CIC type sound with the occasional emo part (ala Drowningman) and there is plenty of double bass to go around, so overall I'd definitely say that Break of Dawn have a nice, unique sound to them rather than the somewhat monotonous trap that other bands of this genre fall in. Very metal and very dark hardcore. If you like metal but like hardcore like Starkweather, Acme, Systral, etc, you'll definitely want to check out Break of Dawn
