Artist description
Oil is the name of the band five Dutch men started in the spring of 1997 as an excuse to play their harts out and make records. In those early days the band made name for themselves playing squats and youth centers all over Holland. It wasn’t long before they were picked up by Commitment Records, who put out their first 7", which represented a cynical view of the scene that had spawned them.Cynicism however made way for a more personal approach to their music and lyrics. With a new drummer and a second guitar player added the band broadened their horizons both musically and geographically, giving them the opportunity to play many shows throughout Europe.Feeling that the Commitment 7" wasn’t an accurate representation of Oil anymore they recorded 4 songs by themselves in their own rehearsal space. Initially intended as just a demo tape those recordings received such acclaim they were released as a limited edition 12" on Little People records, carrying the title „Better Get It In Your Soul". In support of this album the band toured Europe several times, playing squats, youth centers and basements in Austria, France, Belgium, Italy, Spain, Germany, England, Denmark, Sweden and Norway showcasing indeed the soul referred to in the records title. Now as their live show proves, this band has a battle to win. True to their chemical namesake their combustible quality results in an explosive display of both raw energy and striking musicianship. It was this combination that made Coalition Records approach the band for their first full length. Recorded and mixed at Bunts Studios (NRA, Human Alert, Seein‚ Red, Mainstrike) by Menno Bakker and NRA guitar player Orange it shows the band’s growing maturity and ability to blend influences such as Jawbreaker, Turning Point, Led Zeppelin, Rocket From The Crypt and Fugazi into a sound uniquely their own. Entitled „Definition Delta" this is the album that will steal the hearts of hardcore kids, emo kids, punks and music lovers alike. |

Press Reviews
MaximumRockNRoll #200 (USA)Amazing record and easily the best late-80s influenced record of the year. The music never quits on this one sided 12". Oil sticks tempo change ups with precision but a rough, semi-loose style and production, vaguely similar to rock sensibility of Swiz and Inside Out. Vocal similarities to early Nations on Fire. I’ve played this record for as many people as I could this month and all have been similarly impressed. Only 300 copies were made, which is the only flaw with this record. (TH) |
