"Modern rock with...a widely accessible appeal and that's worth a lot"Reviewer: The Buffalo News - Friday, September 29, 2000 - Toni Ruberto American Icon, a band that's seemingly appeared out of nowhere, is getting quite a lot of attention these days. Interruption Television is flying the band to Bali to perform at a launch party for Much Music Asia (the international equivalent of MTV) in January. What’s the fuss? Guitarist Joe Nocera, drummer Greg Pokoj and bassist Gary Smith make comfortable and familiar modern rock with a laid-back attitude. It has a widely accessible appeal and that's worth a lot. Crafted through the trio's variety of influences, the music has a jam band soul but also offers glimpses of light jazz, funk and progressive rock. Singer Gary Smith has a bit of gruffness to his voice that works well with the music, as the band utilizes energy, not volume, to give a song its strength. The opening track from this self-titled effort is called, quite conveniently, "American Icon". It starts out like a jam band number, but quickly adds a modern rock twist (think of the Canadian band Rusty) and ends with a delightful instrumental bridge complete with Spanish flair. "The Meadows" is an even-tempered acoustic rock song. There's a lovely acoustic opening evolving into a quite progressive rock-jazz on "18 Miles". "On the Run" has a wonderful retro feel with just a hint of jazz again and a sexy little groove. I’m not a fan of the processed vocals on the track, but somehow it works here. "Rollercoaster" breaks out of the jam mold with an interesting little guitar line popping up from the background and a catchy, rock chorus. "From the second listen, I found myself singing along to the songs" Reviewer: Fireworks Magazine/UK - June 2000 - Nicky Baldrian Fans of modern rock may want to pick up on the excellent CD by AMERICAN ICON, out now on Archive Records. This excellent record features a massive fourteen songs that are superbly played. From the second listen, I found myself singing along to the songs, they are fresh and very exciting with lots of different musical changes throughout the record. America Icon remind me of Aerosmith, 54-40, Ocean Coliur Scene. Check out songs like "She Just Satisfies" and the kick arse "Something Wrong" all satisfy the musical taste buds.
