ALANE GABRIEL(Singer, dancer, songwriter, producer)(Biography by Brian Bolding)HOW IT ALL BEGAN.In 1977 Alane’s teachers at school suggested he should learn a hobby. The first suggestion was sports - Gymnastics to be more specific. Since the kid seem to be more interested in something creative more than a mere sport.“Gymnastics seemed to be the biggest thing going on back then. So that caught my attention and I wanted to do what these athletes were doing. As a matter of fact, I used to dream about representing my country in the Olympic games. Then I had an accident on “The Horse” and I hit my head so strong that I passed out. Once I recovered, I thought -Hell! Mexico will have to find someone else to represent them. I am out of here! Right in front of the building -where the gym was located, was the “Carmela Webber’s Classical Ballet Academy“.“I used to stand in front of the window while waiting for my mother to pick me up from the gym. I wanted to join the dancers so bad, but back then I thought classical ballet was a “Girl’s Thing,” so I didn’t mention anything to my mother because I was afraid other kids were going to make fun of me. So I kept attending the gym until the accident. It was not until I was 14 years old that I finally joined the class and realized that I wasn’t the only male!”By 1982 Alane was already in formal training with Ana Bonavidez, a Dance teacher he met at the high school he was attending. She was teaching ballet and Mexican folk at the Casa de la Cultura (House of culture) She extended him an invitation to join.“Ana became like my second mother, my teacher and my best friend! She was always willing to teach me at the speed I wanted, It did not matter if she had to stay longer than expected -even though she gave me a scholarship. I was not paying a dime for my training. She just knew I wanted to learn very badly and she was determined to make a professional out of me… at any cost!”The first performance Alane participated in was completely unexpected. He was asked to meet the Dance Company at a local performance, just to help with the organization and the lights. By the end of the night, he wound up on front center stage… dancing!“She tricked me! I was very shy and when we talked about me performing I always felt like I wanted to vomit. The thought of being observed by strangers made me feel very uncomfortable. And that day she said to me that I needed to wear a costume of Veracruz, because she wanted people to think the company was bigger that it was. It did not make any sense to me, but I didn’t mind. I remained on the side of the stage just as I was asked. Once the music started, she pushed me onto the stage and ordered me to dance! I was not going to have the scholarship otherwise. I was petrified, but I started to hear people applauding. I got very excited and I did really well. Ever since, being on the stage is what I live for.”GREAT EXPECTATIONS.Creating art became Alane’s only purpose in life. His thirst for Knowledge was limitless. He ventured into every possible area of learning: music, painting, acting, etc. In 1994 He joined Carmela weber’s class. She gave him a scholarship and suggested that he take music lessons. “I had no Idea where to go and I did not have the money to pay for private lessons. I asked Ana if she knew of something and she sent me to the Social Security Administration building. I learned they had free classes for low-income families. I qualified. Soon after,I met Patricia Facit there. She was the music teacher, and we really clicked the moment we met. Not long after, she offered me piano lessons at her home at no cost. Of course I accepted. I really became part of her family as well. And I learned about her father “Humberto Facit” a great composer and excellent musician. “A year later she told me I needed more than she could possible help me with. She referred me to the Casa de la Cultura to find Mr. Lorenzo Hernandez. but eventually I teamed up with Marthita Narro, his assistant”Alane started his lessons. Marthita was couching him with “Nadia’s Theme” He learned so fast that she gave him “Marriage of Love” and then to slow him down “La gavota debutante”. She was sure that was going to stop him due to the difficulties of the piece, and his recently learned poor ability to play the piano. He learned as well and he was asked to participate at the Spring break recital with the other students. This caught Mr. Hernandez’ attention and he took him in. Both personalities crashed once they were face to face. Mr. Hernandez was as talented as hot-tempered. And he was famous for the extreme discipline to his students. “I really didn’t care for Mr. Hernandez. He made me cry more than once! The fact of the matter is that I was used to the woman’s soft ways. His Personality was not kind, soft or easy for that matter. The last thing I wanted was to have a piece of his mind. So I studied a lot. I was trying to avoid any confrontation. Eventually, I got to understand the man. He was not as bad as I thought, he hated the idea of wasting his time. We became really great friends and I really learned discipline. Many times -after reviewing my lessons, he would share with me some of the greatest moments in his life -as a person and as a professional. He told me once he expected a lot from me. That scared the hell out of me. But it was that great expectation that really guided me.”Alane’s schedule was getting hectic; Dance lessons, Music lessons and School, were occupying all of his time. He attended one last recital with Mr. Hernandez. “I was going to participate at the “spring break” recital, with Mr. Hernandez at “The Plastic Arts Exhibit Auditorium,” which was located in my hometown. “The Tear’s of a mother,” was the name of the recital. I was so exited. I actually called my own mother, who was now living in the U.S. We went to the auditorium and I surprised her with it. I did so well, that the next day my picture was on the front page at the local newspaper.”GOING HIS OWN WAY.By the Spring of 1995, it was suggested that Alane leave Casa de la Cultura. Lorenzo had asked him to go formal. Against everyone’s wishes, Alane joined the “Superior School of Music.”“I forgot about dance and I became a full time music student. But I was determined to do as I wanted, so I did.” Alane found in the institution what he was searching for, many artists as eager to learn as himself. And great teachers, most of them internationally renown. Among the figures/Artists whom coached him were personalities such as: Martha Felix (Soprano), Bernardino Peres Fitz (Tenor), Consuelito Valdez Chanto (Soprano), Delfina Barrera (Piano), Nina Villalba (Soprano, Organist, Pianist), Jesus “Chuy” Martinez (Opera chorus Director).Luis Diaz Duran, and Victor Arambula.Soon enough, Alane became a teachers dream. His self-discipline and cheerful personality earned him the love and respect of his classmates. He was always ahead of his classes and since he didn’t have a piano at home, he had to stay overnight to study at the school. “ I did live quite far from School. Many of us (Students) did not have an instrument to practice with at home. I had to stay sometimes after mid night to get my work done. It was like a 2-hour walk at least three times a week.I was going to college as well, so I had to wake up early in the morning. My day usually started at 6:00 in the morning and I stayed awake sometimes until two in the morning. It was very difficult to maintain good grades at both schools, but I did very well. Delfina Barrera became very fond of Alane once she discovered the struggle he had to go trough to continue with his education. She was a very spiritual woman. And Alane was a practicing Buddhist and followed his religion to the letter, another reason they clicked almost immediately. They spent long hours together talking about music and life.“From all the wonderful teachers and people I have encountered in my life, Delfina will always occupy a very special place in my heart. She was not only a very skilled and talented pianist, she was very much a woman. I will never forget all the knowledge she shared with me. You know, she studied with Manuel M Ponce. She told me all about it. Once can only imagine what is like to be face to face with some one like Mr. Ponce. She even gave me the score sheet of the “Intermezzo” she studied with. I still have it.”THE VOICE.Not everything went this nice all the time. Delfina was also a very strict teacher, and pushed Alane above his limits. While the rest of the students of the same level were playing pieces form the Ana Magdalena Bach book, Alane was introduced to Chopin, Mozart and such. Every day was becoming more and more difficult to the young student. After the first year, he was asked to pick a second instrument. Voice became Alane’s second instrument. Shortly after, Alane joined as a baritone. The Camerata and Opera chorus directed by Chuy Martinez, with whom he traveled the North of Mexico. Alane’s life was completely limited to studying and learning. Funds were limited, so he had to get a job at a local restaurant. Sometimes he found himself playing the piano for the restaurant patrons, just for the sake of it. The name of the restaurant was El bodegon de Efrain. The restaurant belongs to Efrain Dominguez. A very well known Pianist.“Mr. Dominguez was very good to me. His restaurant was the most expensive and elegant one in the city, and it was a favorite among local personalities. He was also the director of the Fernando Soler theatre, so he was well respected in the arts field and the Mexican Jet Set. That’s when I noticed that I needed to work on my manners. I always felt out of place. I come from a very humble home, so there were many things I needed to learn. He was more than happy to answer all my questions. He did refine me a lot and teach me how to pick and match my clothing. I became a Gentleman -Against my will. But I did! I still find it frivolous, but I have to admit that it has opened a lot of doors for me. Hey! I’ll do whatever it takes to succeed. And something as superficial as an “Image” is also a big push in this profession I have chosen. I take it as what it is. I still avoid social endeavors as much as I can though!THE UPS & DOWNS.By 1999, Alane’s schedule was too much to handle. He was tired of the books, the reading, the practicing and the discipline. He finally decided to emigrate to United States of America. Once in the states, life was nothing like it was before in his hometown. He did not speak the language, and this was depressing for the talkative and ambitious teen. His work at a local restaurant did not fulfill his spirit. He hated every second of the day working at this place, and he was determined to learn the language at any cost. A year after his arrival, he was already pushing his career again in a foreign country, with a different culture, and a different language. Gloria Garza -A theater’s teacher at a local school, heard about him and asked him to go see her. Alane’s life was once again taking the right course. She helped him understand the culture, the language, and American traditions. Shortly after, Alane was flying solo once again.“I was very happy to be able to feel myself again. Gloria was very helpful, and very loving towards my persona. It took me sometime to get used to the language, the culture, but I was determined to do so. At this moment of my life, this was essential to my development and Future success.Alane continued working whatever jobs he could find while trying to find his niche. He started writing as a stress therapy. A few months later he had quite an interesting story in his hands; the few people that read his work encouraged him to do something with it. That is how he met John Costello,a talented director’s assistant for a Media/Film production firm. The project did not find investors interested in a Latin film, and both decided to call it quits.Mr. Costello introduced Alane to Mrs. Conte De Loyo. Once she learned about Alane’s dance background, she extended him an invitation to study with her. A few months later, Alane was a welcome addition to the Dance Company. He became a regular performing dancer in Mrs. De Loyo Dance company. AFTER THE FALL.In august 1994, Alane was invited by Mrs. De Loyo to represent Spain in the “WORLD CUP 1994 Opening Ceremonies” in Dallas Texas. He was the only man invited to join and it was a success. However, by the end of the year, Alane decided to leave it all.“I left the dance field because I was tired of everything! I mean, I did not see myself reaching as far as I wanted. The fact of the matter is that my career was going really well, but I was tired and my perception was deceiving me so I did quit. Conte was not pleased with this, neither my friends nor my family. But I had to do what I had to do. I was also having some Personal problems, which I am not going to talk about. But it was time for me to let go. Time to find myself in a spiritual level, I guess. My real purpose in life. After a few years -And a lot of shitty works! I concluded that I was born to be an artist. I learn that this is the only thing I like to do, the only thing I want to do and for that matter, the only thing I am good at.From 1995 to March 2000 Alane was inactive as an artist. His life and “looks” had changed so much; none of his colleagues were able to recognize him. The once slender and handsome man, was now a heavyset and unhappy man. With no career, no dreams to follow. “The worst moment of my life, was when I attended a performance of my former dance partner, Julia Alcantara. Nobody recognized me! Someone even pushed me away when I tried to say hello. I understand I really did look completely different that I used to, but back then it was devastating for me. I was very, very hurt....Then I tried to work a business deal with a friend of mine to open a spa and it did not go trough. Later in march, I found myself with no job and no life.I sat down at my bed and start thinking what to do with my life.I looked around me and I noticed I had neglected my room due to my work. It was a mass of documents and folders everywhere. There was a book I had for quite some time, I stopped cleaning and read a few pages. I found inspiration to go back to my roots. Suddenly, I found myself thinking about starting all over again. At that time, I had not played an Instrument in about ten years. But I was good at it once and I was sure I could -with practice, be good again. I always wanted to be a pop singer, a huge dream of mine since I when a young kid. To write songs and things of that nature. As a matter in fact, that is how everything got started, I just got lost in the way.BACK IN BUSINESS (SHOW BUSINESS, THAT IS.)I didn’t think about it any longer. I bought an electronic keyboard and a Pc. -I had to start somewhere! It’s hard to believe that less than a year has passed ever since. I had composed, arranged and produced my first album in that short period of time. I have not fully recovered my ability to play just yet, it was very difficult to produce the music of the album. I ran into so many difficulties. But over all, I am at peace with myself. I am happy to be who and what I am. I am full of dreams to achieve. I am back, really back...”
