Artist description
Ian Simpson is an unsigned independent 24 year old singer / songwriter based in Aberdeen, Scotland. Influenced by the lyrical talents of Bill Calaghan, Aidan Moffat, Nick Drake and Jim O’Rourke and the experimental nature of Stephen Malkmus, he has been writing and recording his own material for over seven years. He began playing the live circuit in early 2002 and since then has gigged regularly, culminating in early 2003 as a finalist in the Daily Record’s 192 Big Break Acoustic competition.
His tracks have appeared on an Ouzel Records (IT) release alongside June Of ’44 as well as various fanzine compilations. He has also appeared on Unknown Public’s Bloody Amateurs box set after Mark Russell of BBC Radio 3’s Mixing It programme described his song writing style as “The UK’s answer to Beck”.
Ian has released four CDs on the Lost Wasp Records label, selling them from his guitar case at gigs as well as his website. Tracks from each of these releases have gained radio airplay from north-east Scotland to south-east USA and have been favourably reviewed by fanzines and online music sites. |
