GARY BURTON ON BOCLE BROTHERS FIRST RELEASE "GOING PLACES" : I've just heard a great recording. To Begin with, I was expecting to enjoy the music. Afterall, it features my favorite new vibist, Jean-Batiste Bocle, who along with his brother Gildas, grew up in Rennes, France. This talented youg man is a joy to hear, and he is rapidly redefining the instrument in his own style. He is also the composer of much of the material on this project, and it turns out that he has an equally impressive talent for writing as for improvising. The other musicians are friends whose playing I know well, and greatly admire. John Abercrombie is one of the most important guitarists around these days, and he puts in some great solos on this record in his role as special guest. Don Mc Caslin is a relatively new tenor saxophone talent who has quickly become know among musicians as a man to watch. I have had the opportunity to play a lot with Don and the bass-playing Bocle Brother, Gildas, over the past few years which as given me the chance to get to know their abilities very well. These are guys with tremendous talent. The group is rounded out with drummer Marcello Pellitteri, who is from Italy, as his name would suggest, but has worked in the USA for the past several years. This group, sans guitarist Abercrombie, has been playing together for a couple of years both here in the USA and in Europe. The rapport they have developed is quite eveident here. Both the compositions and the interactions of the players demonstrate the results in this well-crafted set of music. They have developed into a strong, cohesive group. I've seen them play in person several time and always loved it. The compositions are very appealing. Jean-Batiste does most of the writing. My favorite of his include GAME OVER and TRY AGAIN. However, perhaps my favorite piece of the whole recording is one of the two songs composed by Gildas, wich features his talent on bassist. WHEREVER YOU GO begins with a beautiful and hauting bass melody, played with exquisite skill, using the bow. This is followed by a transition into tempo for some very melodic improvising by the group. .../... GARY BURTON |
