Artist History
Vincent F. Guerra has spent the major part of the last thirty-seven years as a dedicated physician. He is a graduate of Union College, Georgetown University Medical School and completed clinical training in Internal Medicine at the Upstate Medical Center in Syracuse. After military service in the US Air Force medical corps, he settled in Massachusetts in the 1960’s. He practiced primary care medicine in several communities near Boston until his retirement from full-time practice in 1998. He currently is engaged in part-time professional activities in his area, including mentoring medical students.Coming from a musical family he has been a long-time devotee of music. He started lessons in classical piano in the second grade that he continued through high school. As a teen he found his way into a dace-band typical of that era in his hometown of Schenectady, NY. Over the years he continued listening to music of a wide variety of styles and, time permitting, performed privately for friends and his own pleasure. Since the mid-1990’s, Guerra has been studying part-time jazz piano and composition with world-renown composer and jazz-pianist, William Thomas McKinley. He has continued to refine his piano skills and has now progressed to composing ballads. In the past year, one of Guerra’s ballads was incorporated into a new violin concerto by McKinley and was premiered early in 2000 at Alice Tully Hall in Lincoln Center. In the summer of 2000, Guerra made a recording of his compositions on solo piano and in ensemble with McKinley on piano, Michael Finegold on flute, and Morzo Reis on bass. His goal is to continue composing, leading to a symphonic work under the tutelage of Mr. McKinley as well as performing with jazz groups in the Boston area.Guerra resides with his wife Jolene, a retire social worker, in Topsfield, MA. They have three children and four grandchildren. Besides indulging in medicine and music, he maintains an eclectic lifestyle, participating in the town’s Historical Society, college fund-raising, a church ministry, enjoying domestic and foreign travel, other cultural and civic functions as well as walking, tennis, and skiing. |
