    Artist History
Swivel Stick ( 1993 - present ) Swivel Stick, a hybrid jazz-rock trio, began writing and playing music in the fall of 1993. Members of the first incarnation, Richard Rippe ( electric bass and vocals ), Carl Ferarri ( electric guitar ), Christopher Cline ( drums ), Michael Kavanaugh ( vocals ) and Michael Bennet (electric guitar) displayed a fondness for melodic and expressive post punk material. After the summer of 1994, the band became a trio consisting of Rippe, Ferarri and Cline and the music shortly there after evolved, looking for new forms and direction. Releasing two seven inches and an E.P., their influences ranged from bands like Mission of Burma to My Bloody Valentine and Sonic Youth to jazz giants like John Coltrane and Maha-vishnu Orchestra. Swivel Stick were now heading into untouched terrain by any local Miami band. By 1996, with collaboration from Space Cadette Records, the band released their debut CD entitled NOTES TOWARDS A MENTAL BREAKDOWN. The music had finally evolved into a sound all their own. Live shows were described as walls of sound drenched in sonic beauty. This control over sound and rhythm began a new phase with Swivel Stick as free jazz slowly began to creep into their live sets. By 1997, the band had created a signature sound for themselves as expressed in most local and state music magazines. However, this was soon to change as the band set aside their vociferous set, and began to play straight jazz standards. Hitting local book stores, coffee shops, and small venues, Swivel Stick enjoyed the toning down of volume in exchange for crowd pleasers. For the next two years, this would be the role of Swivel Stick, a jazz trio. Winter of 1999 began the next phase for the band, incorporating electronic instruments and sequences to their sets. An experiment to add to their growing evolving sound. Today, Swivel Stick play out at small coffee shops and when given the chance for a live loud show, they will display all the facets they have explored. The band has always been regarded as playing on the fringe, letting it all show, a personality that will never change for Swivel Stick.
