Artist History
The origins of Ingenious Whittler are shrouded in the mists of time and innumerable gin and tonics. Not since Jolson has such a powerful force been seen upon the stage. In fact, the members of Ingenious Whittler once challenged Jolie to a fistfight and beat him bloody – without the aid of their road crew! It all began when Jeff Christian and Peter Dally-Steele, chums since boyhood, endeavored to devise an entertainment for their polo club’s Spring Cotillion. They stole guitars, recruited some friends, and learned all the verses to “The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald”. The rest is history. As a child, Dally-Steele (Whittler’s chief composer) modified his 8-Track player so that he could listen to all 8 tracks at once. The resulting sound so impressed the lad that he has never stopped trying to imitate it. As for lyrical imagery, Dally-Steele has no equal – surely no other songwriter could wring such pathos out of rhyming “truck” with “truck”. Ingenious Whittler, it must be admitted, overflows with talent - from the young rakehell, Peacock, who strums his guitar in a devil-may-care fashion, to the puckish antics of Eugene Gowan, whose voice has the lilt of a true son of Erin, to the dashing good looks and powerful elocution of Hugh Wing. Tab Miller, accordionist, saxophonist, and Whittler’s most eligible bachelor, is the ladies’ man of the group (who can forget the Big Red incident?), but don’t worry, ladies, he can take care of himself.) It is inevitable that legends should emerge surrounding this mysterious band of musicians. Whittler can neither confirm nor remember whether the famous early morning recording session with Paris and the Fat Guy actually occurred. Nor is there any actual evidence of Christian’s torrid affair with the legendary soundman, James. Members of Whittler may or may not have fallen down on the Beat Kitchen stage. “Escape from Elephant Island”, Whittler’s tribute to South Pole explorer Ernest Shackleton, remains the group’s best-selling CD, with sales well into the double digits. Their latest effort, "Race to Cairo," promises to be an even greater success. With the upcoming release of their fifth album, "Al Smith's New York," (on the Tiny Records label) Ingenious Whittler are poised on the brink of superstardom. Wish them luck! |
