Press Reviews
HONOLULU ADVERTISER, 8-25-2000, by Jan Tenbruggencate "...A dazzling superhero joined us on the bus. He was a tall guy. He wore trousers of many colors, with diagonal strips of leather stitched on from mid-thigh down. He had a pair of dark glasses with sequins. He had rings, visible because the fingers of his gloves had been cut out. He took a seat in the back of the bus, said nary a word and kept his gaze focused outside, which made it easier for folks inside to surreptitiously check out his outfit, which they only did out of the corners of their eyes. Side-eye, we used to say when i was a kid..."*** HONOLULU STAR BULLETIN, 1991, by John Berger, "Many local artists claim to love, to honor and play rhythm and blues. Bland and Children Of The East actually make good that promise. Of course Bland (an Afro-American) isn't actually from "here" but now calls Hawaii home. This cassette qualifies as a product worth the interest of adventurous consumers of unknown but original music. Bland's photo on the cover might cause him to be misidentified as a reggae artist, but Bland and his band aren't a reggae act. Bland writes and plays a broader cross-section of African-American music. The album opens with melodic rap -- "C.O.T.E. (Children Of The East)" and "Dance The Night Away" -- and then shifts into a lighter Latin jazz sound when flute and Afro-American percussion are featured on side two. Multi-talented producer/pianist/synthesizer programmer Pierre Grill and local funkmaster Willy Hill are among the artists that join Bland and his band on a musical calling card that's not bad at all for original dance-oriented music by an as-yet unknown composer.*** RODELL RECORDS, from Tom Carter, 4-4-1994, "Our A&R department has conducted an extensive evaluation of all songs that have been submitted to our nationwide talent search. You have been judged on a point system that considers the following: originality, content, technical ability and overall presentation. We feel that your song "So Full Of Love" has commercial potential..."***EL HISPANO NEWS, from Sara Garcia, "I spoke to the producers of one of the most famous television programs of the Hispanic world to see if they could invite you to appear on the program...I hope that they will invite you to be on the show so that thousands of viewers can see the great talent you have and maybe you can make your dream come true." |
