Artist History
Henry Matisse once said that interpreting the human figure brought him closest to expressing the almost religious feelings he had toward life. Brett Ellis could say the same about guitars -- any guitar. With a half dozen nylon- and steel-stringed acoustic guitars and a matching arsenal of electric guitars occupying every spare inch of his San Diego apartment, one literally can’t take more than a few paces without encountering the device through which Brett most comfortably talks to the world. But if a guitar is his mouth, Brett Ellis is most certainly multi-lingual. A year ago, Brett took a departure from his rock and roll heritage – a decade-long career that produced a couple of acclaimed singles, several rock albums of his own and which brought him to the stage with such legendary rock performers as Glenn Hughes of Deep Purple, and Sammy Hagar of Van Halen. He began to focus on a different sound, one that would appeal to a new world of listeners. He released his first classical album for guitar in 1999. Word of mouth alone made it the instant best-seller of his career. Today, Brett performs in support of his second classical recording, released Dec. 9, 2000. What could make a rock guitar hero turn a refined cheek to the solemnity of a classical audience? The answer is Fernando Sor (1778-1839), a Spanish composer with whom Brett could identify -- someone who, in his day, rocked the world of contemporary music in his own way.Fernando Sor is credited for making the guitar – a common, vaudeville instrument of the day – a popular orchestral instrument, a notion later embraced by other great composers. But he was not a galvanized hero. Sor was widely criticized for being too difficult for amateurs to play. Even today, Fernando Sor’s music requires the skill of a true artisan like Brett Ellis. “Classical Guitar Compositions by Fernando Sor, Vol. 2” is Brett’s latest classical CD release. It is available exclusively at www.EllisMusic.com, along with his first classical release, “Classical Guitar Compositions by Fernando Sor, Vol. 1” and his collection of rock albums. Brett Ellis was born in Fort Worth, Texas and raised in San Diego, Calif. He is a graduate of the Guitar Institute of Technology in Hollywood, Calif. He was a private guitar instructor in San Diego for 10 years. He continues his work in his eponymously named rock band ELLIS, whose third album will be released early next year. # # # # |
