    Artist History
Conscious Reaction was formed in 1987, when grade-school friends Stephen Rippy, Brian Finke, and Kevin McMullan held their first rehearsal. Singer Nathan Coin joined soon after, and the group was christened "Front Page." After a year or so of playing neighborhood gigs and learning how to write songs, Front Page accepted Bryan Ray into the fold as bassist. In 1989, the band changed its name to "Conscious Reaction," and lost founding member Brian Finke. Newcomer Rob Szot was his replacement, and despite a brief rotation of secondary female singers, the band had achieved its permanent lineup. In the early 1990s, the members of Conscious Reaction entered high school and began to develop their trademark sound: skilled, bombastic playing combined with an unusual sense of humor. The band's first official record, "Bringin' Home the Bacon," was released in 1992, followed by "Nuclear Waist" in 1993 and "Coal Slaw" in 1994. Each of these EPs was completely homemade, produced and performed by the band on various four-track tape machines. Throughout their high school years, Conscious Reaction continued to play shows and refine their writing and recording techniques. In the last quarter of 1994, the group (except for singer Nathan Coin) moved en masse to Austin, TX, hearing the twin siren songs of college and the club scene. Unable to find either a replacement for their singer or an audience for their music, the band decided to call it a day. After recording a full-length album ("Cadence") with Coin in 1995, Conscious Reaction dissolved itself. Represented here are songs from each of the group's high school releases, as well as tracks from "Cadence" and one live performance. Have fun with it - we did!
