Artist History
After McGrew, Fortier, and Seal returned from Beijing, China in early '98, they started mind-melding. Kimo came soon thereafter, and they built a shelter of twigs and boulders. From behind this rustic fortress, they began to lob melodic bon mots at passersby and tourists. As Kimo ate magic figs and Mcgrew deeply considered art and underclothes for the cause at hand, Guy and Xifer set about discussing how we all seemed like a most remarkable band. |

Press Reviews
"Griddle's show is equal parts spectacle and sonic crush. Any band thatcooks bacon and home fries on stage is alright with me, particularly ifthey bring enough for everyone. Fortunately, the band was optimisticenough to bring several sacks of Ore-Ida waffle-cut potatoes, an ampleamount to distribute amongst the hundred-plus participants at theBroadway Studios nightclub. Even without the arguably-gimmicky foodpreparation, the band's raw, melodic mutant-rock had the crowd entrancedfrom the first count-off by drummer Chris McGrew.Surging swagger-glam, twisted near-bubblegum confections, and scaldingpowder-burn post-punk were the main ingredients, but the four able-earedcooks blended them perfectly into a distinctive soup that needed noextra salt for flavoring. The crowd rallied for seconds, and the chefswere quick to comply, ladeling out generous helpings of thick, mature, challenging pop. I had never before heard of the four gents*who, itturns out, are alums of the hip-hop tribe Human Z, the funk band RhythmBaptism, the homoerotic metal group Sparrows Point, and the pan-Africandance band the Slaptones, respectively*but I*m looking forward to therelease of their full-length CD, which they*re saying will be out bymid-2001. Don*t miss these guys, and bring an appetite." *Amanda Lewis, San Francisco Chronicle, September 15, 2000"(Griddle plays) the kinds of melodies that are difficult to predict, but once they unfold, they seem inevitable--like great radio hits thatyou never heard at the time. They get stuck in your head after the show, but you don't really mind." *Marc Polsgrove, The Oakland Observer, August 11, 2000"I thought I'd seen enough of Beatlesque bands on the San Francisco clubscene, but Griddle puts a different spin on the old equation, bangingout frenetic little gems with the urgency of the Minutemen and the loopysense of humor of Camper Van Beethoven. Not ones to shy away from oddtextures, these four young turks employ all forms of vintage stompboxesand futuristic effects modules to muddy the waters of their crystallinecompositions--think of the Barrett-era Floyd that gets channeled byRadiohead, but with a less morose worldview." *Parker Bronson, The Washington Post, August 3, 2000"Fun fun fun! I was sulking in the corner behind the table until Griddlecame on stage. Smart lyrics (but not winkingly clever), smart melodies(but not precious), and smart dressers (but not given to trend-jumping).Fun fun fun!" *Shandi DeLucia, Listen.com, October 28, 2000 |
