Artist description Doumbe is a world drum trio, playing drums from all over the world--everything from African Djembe to Trinidadian Steel Drums to Latin American Congas. We include some rhythms indigenous to these instruments, but our music is American in flavor. We also have a vocalist for many of the numbers.

Artist History Doumbe began in September of 1999 when Lance LeVar and Sean Jackson decided to pull out their djembe and didjeridoo and do an impromptu concert in the main lobby of the Harris Fine Arts Center at Brigham Young University. Joe Center had been on his way to the practice rooms when he heard them playing and joined in. It didn’t take long for them to get kicked out of the building by disgruntled faculty ruffled by the noise. They took the show outside and continued playing. After the first show they decided to make it a weekly thing. Other friends came and went joining in when they could. Eventually, Joe and Lance moved to another part of the campus playing every week for the rest of the school year. Doumbe was born.In December, as an assignment for his songwriting class, Joe wrote a song (Clouds) arranged for djembe, steel pan, and voice. Having worked with Tracy Madsen once before, he asked her gracious assistance in laying down the melody and singing the piece. The piece was later performed at the Timpanogos StoryTelling Festival and Tracy became a permanent member of the group maintaining her original role of helping Joe with melodies, and then, of course, singing them.
