Artist History
This project began in early 1998, the outcome of a conversation with Phil Punch of Electric Avenue recording studios. He asked ?Why don1t you do something really big?1In the early stages the toughest realisation was that I, as the author, even in my musical infancy, had to make the important decisions. My inexperience caused some problems with those who wanted to lead rather than guide, and the one wanting to hide - me.My luck changed, when I met the inspirational journeyman, Steve Clisby at the Electric Avenue Recording Studio. He is the embodiment of many of the things that I imagined about the music scene, as I grew up listening to the radio. He had lived in a tree-house with Frank Zappa's 'Mothers ofInvention' in San Francisco', had Hits in Europe wit h the 'American Gypsies'and had his own work recorded by leading artists - just to name a fewthings, and of course, he is a fine singer and pianist.Steve reveals these snippets only occasionally, as he looks you in the eye, you standing up, he sitting dow n, his head bent to one side, assessing you with one eye like a great whale - or so it seems. What impressed me the most, is, that he helped someone who was no one, sharing his musical spirit.Steve did all the male vocal backing parts. Significantly he in troduced me to his friend Jivan, his piano player on various projects and Sigrid Langford, a lovely young singer, who with her natural grace, provided the female vocal parts.Jivan the great urbane 'genie in the bottle1 and Southern Gentleman, with a fine musical education and sensibility, provided the foundation for me tobecome the leader of the project, something which I had struggled with at earlier stages. His influence was profound. Again, a generosity of spiritgraced this venture. After countless hou rs of musical Snakes and Ladders the set of songs was 'finished'. Sony's sound engineer Todd Deeley made the journey a joy. Neverover-bearing, ill-tempered or mentally rigid - only highly capable, compatible and a Wizard on the Pro -Tools. My concept evolved into an exploration of both musical and painting styles. In short, an exploration of how one might describe an aspect of living, through a picture or a song, using as many channels of communication aspossible, all the while balanced on a pleasing edge of mania. My colleague and friend Nicholas Rothwell expressed this more beautifully,"To master one art might be a matter of talent; to pursue two speaks also ofdedication, the same dedication that leads a man to yearn to reach the heart of life"Not everyone may be interested in yet more words, but hell, for those who have a little time to spend as they are relaxing in a bath - with a friendor a cup of tea - here is a little bit about the songs. |
