Artist description What and/or who is Psychobud?Psychobud has been an underground recording group, first and foremost. Psychobud has always had this very strong individualistic approach to music. We’ve done our “own thing” to a fault. Having come up through the ranks of the early Orange County punk rock scene, we weren’t exactly nuts about the music business. We were disenchanted early on…the whole business was suspect, we knew too much and we’re terrible ass kissers. It’s ironic…we love doing the music, but we’ve always moved on to something else musically before we’ve taken the time to beat down doors and market our previous efforts very well. We’re goofy like that. It’s like we’ve got A.D.D. or something. We’re in it for the long haul though…Psychobud is slow burn…we’re always simmering below the surface.What does the name Psychobud mean?One definition for the name Psychobud is “growth of the mind.” Nobody in the band can really take credit for coming up with the name. The name just sort of materialized. That’s one of the reasons we probably continue doing Psychobud. Psychedelic Butterfly was the original name…but because of our intoxicated laziness we all started referring to it as Psychobud. At that point we looked at the abbreviated name and figured it had some positive meaning. It also can be defined as “really good mind expanding marijuana bud.” You decide. Is Psychobud a live band?Psychobud is more of a recording group than a live band at the moment. In 1997 there was some acoustic performances to promote the Vapor CD and way back in 1993 the full band did some live shows to promote what we’ll call the Double Cross EP. Before that we hadn’t performed as Psychobud since 1985 where we went out and did our last show at the Irvine Meadows Amphitheatre in a blaze of glory. Psychobud performed continuously in clubs and major venues from 1982 though 1985.Why did Psychobud stop performing?Psychobud stopped gigging in 1985 because the band unceremoniously melted down and morphed itself into the raucous punk metal band Hate Club and the funk rock band Metropolitan. We never really consciously decided that Psychobud would be put on hiatus, it just kind of happened. At the time we had some people around us that were really pushing for us to hit it big. It was more than hinted that we should change some things about us so we would be better suited for success in the music business. The problem was we had come together as a band so organically and everything seemed to flow so naturally that when it came to being told by outsiders to cut out band members or to change our name or write only certain types of songs we were at a loss and became resistant and defiant. However we couldn’t shake the infighting that resulted and the whole experience took a toll on us. Of course we were also affected by cliché rock and roll distractions like drugs, alcohol and love interests that also found their way into spoil the soup. But ultimately I believe that we had absolutely no intention of selling out to the music business and at that point I think we just decided to blow the whole thing off and move on and into the safe refuge of creating other creep bands.

Artist History Psychobud is a band that emerged out of two 1st generation Orange County punk bands, The Aesthetics and The Dead End Kidds. The band sound was originally created by recording improvised jams ("creeps") then refining and recreating the creeps live. The bands carefree approach to music appealed to audiences immediately and soon Psychobud was headlining and drawing large crowds up and down the west coast. Psychobud released an album in 1984 on EarMovie/Enigma and appeared on various compilations
