Artist History
When my friends and I got together once a year in college to record songs for fun, we decided that we needed a name for the “band”, even though I was the only consistent member of the band. Basically I told anyone that wanted to record anything to just tell me, and I’d play guitar or sing if they wanted, or just record them. I always had a few songs of my own, sometimes I’d get my friends to do backing vocals, and the rest of the songs were whatever covers anyone wanted to do.We had this teacher named Bernie that taught us technical theatre. He enjoyed telling us stories of shows that he’d done, and every so often we noticed that he said things that were simply very funny in a way that he didn’t intend. To pass the time, my friends, Jim and Joel, started paying careful attention to what he said and began logging these “Bernie-isms”. For example, once he was talking about a blonde stage designer who used some colors that didn’t work very well together. He said, by way of summarizing her problem: “Well, some people have *good* color sense, some people have *blonde* hair.” This became a famous Bernie-ism.Another time he told us about a play he was either directing or managing in which he or somebody else decided to add realism to the show by getting a live goat to walk across the stage at one point. In order to get the goat to cross the stage, someone stood in the wings on the opposite side of the stage with some food. In order to be certain that the goat would go after the food, there was a very important directive that went into effect some time before the curtain went up: Don’t Feed the Goat. This became another Bernie-ism, that either Jim or Joel thought would make a good name for a band. So we chose it for the name of our pseudo-band, and I’ve kept it ever since. Presently, it refers to me and whoever else joins me and doesn’t object to the name. |
