    Press Reviews
from Listen.com review: Syracuse, New York Post-Punkers dabble in an assortment of styles, using warped, Swirlies-style textures. Achieving at various moments the icy coolness of Sonic Youth and the sincerity of, say, the Spinanes, each song benefits from a lethal infusion of spirited, possibly J. Mascis-inspired droning, poisonously infectious guitars, and a surgical, unpretentious bass and drums contingency. New enthusiasm for not-so-old fashioned, guitar-driven Post-Punk is increasingly hard to come by, and these authors send their roots digging a little deeper than most. One can only appreciate new music owing as much to seminal classics such as Sonic Youth's "Teenage Riot" and Superchunk's "Slack Motherf*cker" as they do contemporary EMO styling of bands like the Promise Ring and Death Cab for Cutie. -Kelly Bauman from www.cnymusicandart.com:The Flashing Astonishers- Everything is Gonna StopPunk music is alive and well. Actually, punk music is alive and somewhat sickly, for that is the nature of Punk. The Flashing Astonishers’ CD, Everything is Gonna Stop, is proof positive that the spirit that fueled bands like Black Flag and The Dead Kennedys is still out there. And it can be found in OUR local clubs, too. But the Flashing Astonishers are so much more than just a punk band. The music is more complicated than the generic skater music that’s flooded the punk market. The result is a blend of raw aggression and thought-out arrangements. Everything is Gonna Stop features eight songs by the Astonishers that are reminiscent of some of the best alternative bands of the last twenty years. Shades of Green Day, the Cure, Nirvana, Sunny Day Real Estate and even pre-recording contract U2 (pick up an early bootleg, you’ll know what I mean) can be heard throughout the disc. From the opening chords of the first song, Broken Stained Glass, it’s evident that this is not your typical local music disc. Vocals by Dan Musclow, and guitars by both Musclow and Greg Yeti fuel this lush song that ease the listener into the world of the Astonishers. It’s one of the stronger tracks on the CD that is testament to how far the band has come in just a few years. Lipbomb, La De Dey, I’m Not One and Anilo reveal the essence of the band. The guitars and vocals are catchy, the drumming of Bob Kane is tight and sophisticated and Jay Fabbri’s throbbing bass keeps the band together. Anilo, in particular, has the makings of a modern-rock radio anthem. If you’re looking for thrashing, distortion heavy, vocally challenged music, then Alien is punk paradise. This song is raw and aggressive and it’s placement on the disc is perfect for shaking the listener out of any groove that may have been induced as a result of hearing the first two songs. Perhaps the best of the eight tracks is I Come Up, I Go Down. It’s a standout track for multiple reasons. First is the fact that it brings to CD, one of the best examples of what a live Astonishers show is like. The longest song on the CD, it showcases the band’s love of getting lost in a jam-session. The harmonies of the vocals are raw, and yet perfect. The slide guitar that sings behind the band is inspired. Everything on this track is excellent. The drums are hypnotic, the bass is smooth and the guitars are…indescribable. Why aren’t the Flashing Astonishers on your local modern rock radio stations? Maybe you should call and ask? Or better still, demand that they play one of these tracks. To be fair, they can be heard on K-ROCK on Thursday nights, during a local music program called Backstage Live. It’s an hour-long show at 11:00. The host, Silent Bob takes requests. Of course if enough CNY listeners got up off their collective asses and petitioned the station, there might be room for more than just one hour a week dedicated to the local scene.
