Kevin Macza"Themes From A Contemplated Life"By Cory Hildebrand If you listen to this album without reading the liner notes, you will be left with the impression that you are hearing two talented musicians creating a wonderful interplay between bass and guitar. Think again. This is one musician, one instrument; a single bass guitar. A 12 string, that is. Huh? The 12-string bass is an amazing instrument. It consists of the usual EADG bass setup, only each note has three strings; one standard string, and two strings, one octave higher. This allows the player to create melodies that are not limited to just low frequencies. Macza uses this freedom to full advantage. The playing on this album is very good. Also, what is equally impressive is that there are no overdubs; all songs were recorded live to DAT. The playing reminds me of some early Yes albums. However, with the 12-string bass, it's like Steve Howe and Chris Squire in one. The songs, written by Macza, have a classical feel, using lots of melody, as well as chords. The 12-string bass opens the player up to many different styles. This is not a "bass players only" album. Anybody who enjoys creative playing will enjoy this recording.
