Artist description
"Well I guess our music is best described as gothic metal”, says In Grey singer Dennis Liljedahl, “but we are using more and more rockier parts to create greater dynamics in our music”. In Grey has most of the time been described as doom or gothic metal, but Dennis says that that's only partly true. “Take a listen to our latest recording (Mask) and you’ll hear that there is a lot more to it than just doom or gothic metal. We do, however, have our origin in gothic metal, and the gothic twist will always be found in our sound." |

REVIEW FROM CHRONICLES OF CHAOS #42: Though Sweden is easily one of the most productive countries nowadaysas far as metal is concerned, gothic metal has never been a genreSweden has been renowned for. In Grey are one of the bands whostruggle against that situation, and they have been doing that forquite a while now -- since 1992, _Seasons Change_ already being theirfourth studio recording and possibly their last independent release. Not that there is anything mindblowing about it, it's just that theband already shows signs of enough professionalism and musicalquality to justify a label deal. Though not innovative, _SeasonsChange_ still provides an entertaining listen; some of the secondtrack, "In Heaven", brings to mind Anathema's latest works, and thosespecific sections are quite well done. This isn't to say that therearen't some bland riffs or rather average passages here, but In Greyusually manage to come up with something that will carry the songonward quite well most of the time, usually a more melancholic guitaror keyboard passage or a more atmospheric part. All the band membersplay very competently throughout the demo (not that the music is eververy complex anyway) and the clean vocals are generally good(especially the spoken parts). Complete with a nice cover and withthe CD-R recording providing some help for the very decentproduction, _Seasons Change_ is a good demo from a band that seemsquite serious about their music and has its share of talent. Theystill need to focus it better to make a more consistent record --mainly improve the more metallic side of the guitar work and keep astronger feeling throughout the whole record instead of throwing inmore "rocking" tracks such as "Like This", which isn't a bad track initself --, but _Seasons Change_ is nevertheless quite enjoyable andunusually well performed for a demo. (4/5) |
