rocketscience"Rocketscience...It's honest to goodness pop for a girl and a boy... It's not rocket science...Well actually it is!!!" Rocketscience, the undeniable kings of the Boston pop music scene are on a roll. Equipped with their CD release A Girls Name Here and a killer live show, this band is poised to be one of the best acts to come out of Boston in quite some time. Mixing up hooky well written pop songs, clever lyrics, soulful vocals and angst driven hard grooves, proves not to be rocketscience for these four young lads. This groups energy and charisma oozes from every song and every performance.Formed in Boston in 1998, rocketscience was born in the ashes of local rockers Waiting Kates. With deep rooted influences ranging from The Beatles to Led Zeppelin, Otis Redding to Lenny Kravitz, Weezer to Nirvana and Sinatra to The Beastie Boys, the Scientists set out with a new pop vision. After three years of giging and writing, rocketscience made their way into the studio with Producer Scott Riebling (Letters to Cleo, Weezer). They left the studio with A Girls Name Here, their first EP. Currently Rocketscience are writing like crazy and have returned to the beloved studio to record development demos for MCA Records."The energy in the room is tingling as these guys slide from a gentle stroke to a sudden crash..." Rocketscience has excelled at winning over a crowd that has never heard them before. "RocketScience are at once catchy, kitchy, quirky, rocking, and fun." This is also true of their record which has caught the eyes and ears of The Spin College Radio Show, Entertainment Weekly and a growing number of College and Commercial Radio stations including WBCN, WBRU, DCMR/WUDM Detroit, and WLIR. In addition a rave review in CMJ New Music Report calling the disc "a remarkably accomplished debut" and saying it "consists of a slew of radio ready potential hits"."It's love at first listen-hear it once and its stuck in your head for months." Rocketscience prides themselves in their song writing and arrangement prowess, giving real life emotion to powerful songs. "The melodies and harmonies are sweet and tight and perfectly placed". Not to mention they finished 2nd place in the 22nd Annual WBCN Rock 'n' Roll Rumble...Their debut EP, A Girls Name Here, includes six unbelievable new tunes. In support of their disc Rocketscience has hit the road touring nationwide three times always expanding their ever growing fan base. The country is starting to realize that these guys rock. CMJ New Music ReportA&R PickNovember 16, 1999Rocketscience "A Girls Name Here"Continuing in the Tradition of the PushStars, Mike Viola and Morphine, Rocketscience is more compelling proof of Boston's embarrassment of pop riches in the 90's. The band's bombastic, six track "A Girls Name Here" EP consists of a slew of radio ready potential hits that pair gritty, no-nonsense rock with Andrew Galdins velvety pipes. The combo's muscular song-writing also exhibits a grandiosity and a melodic intense that brings new meaning to the term "power pop". Cuts such as the title track and "Sun" for instance are built around potent twists of descending major chords. This remarkably accomplished debut would sound fine played alongside classic late-era Beatles songs. (Galdins' lennonesque rasp of "no, no, no" before he rips into a chorus doesn't hurt the comparison either.) A remarkably accomplished debut.Cheryl BotchickNortheast PerformerIndependent Musicians Resource GuideDecember 1999Rocketscience - A Girls Name HereRocketscience play quality heavy-ended pop, a la Tugboat Annie and Hum. That is to say, pop songs riddled with grinding guitar, full sounding vocal arrangements, and solid overall songwriting. The vocals, which ride easily above RS's chubby open chords mostly tell tales of boy-meets-girl with lyrical suave (after all, what else is pop for?).The most impressive element of A Girls Name Here is the bands song structures. Tight stops that are right on the money, simple changes on the perfect note, and a generous helping o' hooks are all done in simple elegance. Songs like "Sun," "Pedastool," and "Bitter Pill" swing easily from bitter-sweet, calm guitar riffs to swelling full stack sweeps without a moment's notice. You can't say it hasn't been done before, but to their credit, Rocketscience do it pretty well. The music is easily digestible for radio play and the charisma of these tunes have a great aptitude for a large fan base. They should make lots of money.-Rev. Keith W. HarrisYOURSOUND.COM6/2000I'm quickly falling hard for Rocketscience. The wildcard winners are out to demonstrate that their fanatical welcome is justified, and a bit of AC/DC's "For Those About to Rock" serves as their greeting. Yeah! That's just the kind of band that Rocketscience are; quirky and versatile enough to be able to pull off almost anything. With tongue firmly planted in cheek, like the wise-ass in study hall that sticks his hand out for a shake and quickly yanks it back. Singer/ guitarist Andrew Galdins Jr. is in fine form tonight, passing around a photo of a stunning blond named Joy during "Killjoy", and donning a fetching sunflower headdress for "Sun". Guitarist/ singer Jon Towne follows suit with some over the top '80s tapping solos, but none of their goofiness can distract from the fact that these lads have some strong material to work with. Strong hooks, screwball chord progressions and outstanding harmonies are the name of the Rocketscience game, and their fanbase eats it all up. They've beaten the odds thus far, and I'm personally hoping that the trend will continue tonight.-Brian Westbye, YourSound.com, Inc. (c)2000, Brian WestbyeTHE NOISE6/2000WBCN ROCK 'N'ROLL RUMBLE REVIEW JUNE 2000SEMI-FINALSJust when you think you have Rocketscience pegged, they turn the corner on ya. The lads from Weymouth are as deceiving as a knuckleball. This is obviously a band that has soaked in the best of the last 40 years. Tonight a rabid fan base eats up their numerous influences, and spits out the love. Singer Andrew Galdins leads the way with his charismatic delivery and some killer harmonies with guitarist Jon Towne. But this is no mere shoegazing band. No, Rocketscience are at once catchy, kitchy, quirky, rocking, and fun. It's early, but I'm guessing that this will be the most musically adept offering of the night.
