Artist History Max Lange(7 August 1832 - 8 December 1899)A German Player, theoretician, and poblemist. He won first prize at Dusseldorf 1862, 1863 and 1864, Hamburg 1868, and Aachen 1868. His Handbuch der Schachaufgaben, Leipzig 1862, was the first attempt at systemization of problems. His literary output includes a book on Morphy (Leipzig 1859), a primer (Lehrbuch des Schachspiels, Halle 1856), opening monographs and endgame collections. He edited the Deutsche Schachzeitung from 1858 to 1864. As an organizer he was responsible for the Leipzig congress and tournament of 1894; as a problemist he invented the 'helpmate'; as a theoretician he is remembered for the Max Lange Attack (see TWO KNIGHTS DEFENCE).
