Press Reviews
From http://www.powerslave.comOut of the East Bay comes this brand new group who have released this five track EP as their ticket into the Underground Scene. Darkside offers a heavy groove on this their maiden effort which is well produced and definitely a strong starting point for this young outfit. With a bouncier feel to their songs with some strong melody combined with a hint of raspy aggression, Darkside moves at a mid tempo with occasional bass driven mid sections and interludes as in "This Blossom" which offers a bridged break between the distortion. Featuring vocalist / guitarist Mike Gonsolin, bassist Matt Miller, guitarist Chris State, and drummer Josh Wisenor, Darkside has really just jumped out of the gate and with this disc have produced five songs which feature multiple breaks and a vocal effort from Gonsolin which really sets off the disc as he moves from a heavy rasp to a smoother sing creating the musical juxtaposition. Gonsolin's strongest work is easily "Rag Doll" as he moves in and out of the weaving, single note guitar riffs. The other strong pieces on this disc include the jagged riff to "Broken & Dusted" which breaks into the bass driven interlude with some under water warbled guitar. This track also features some of the strongest guitar work as well from both Gonsolin and State with a layered effect driving the sound. This is a good effort and certainly the first step for these guys as they break open into the scene. By Mario Perotti |
